This new era of empowerment has given us a fresh influx of mother-killing-for-her-child films (KIDNAP, HOSPITALITY, BIRD BOX). In this one a travelling Ma's tasked with "taking a soul" as payment for some kinda desert witch healing her snakebitten daughter. The fairytale setup would incline me to look kindly on the contrived narrative--will it be the almost-dead old guy in the next room? the abusive shit who makes his girlfriend stand on milk crates? herself?--if it didn't take every easiest out
