Yes, Jamie Foxx is perfect and was a complete shoo-in for the Oscar, but the movie itself is forgettable in that especially forgettable way in which only biopics can be forgettable.

Boring. Watching Foxx stumbling around is fun for just about half an hour and even though the music's good, it is not enough to save the film without a story, meaning or purpose.

On one hand it's 'Uh! Ah!', handshakes and 'well done' pads on the back for all involved. On the other it's the prototypical biopic, so generic in structure that one could pretty much insert every flawed genius that has ever lived.

Magnificent biopic featuring flawless performances from a first-rate cast -- but it is Foxx's showcase in an uncanny transformation into Charles which is the centrepiece. Screenplay and direction intelligently penetrate Charles' psyche, positing intriguing and compelling reasons for his sometimes bafflingly self-destructive behaviour. Topped by creative use of an outstanding, toe-tapping soundtrack. An extraordinary film about a remarkably talented man.

The stylistic choices are awful and really kick you out of the film, the flashbacks can be jarring, the visual metaphors are very clunky and overdone, the storytelling can be choppy in the way that is so common in biopics as we miss out on the small moments and abandon characters for long periods of time so that the filmmakers can stuff in as much as possible and the ending just falls completely flat.

Terribly melodramatic (but what isn't?). Yes, Jamie Foxx puts in a good performance, but it seems to me to just be an impersonation and not as worthy of the Oscar as, say, Don Cheadle's was that year. Further, he did not even interpret Charles' songs, disappointing considering he's supposedly a musician. (Joaquin Phoenix did, which made Walk the Line feel more like a movie.) Anyway, the best bit is probably the music, which exists (thankfully) independent of this film.

This was great! I don't think anybody else could have pulled off the role of Ray Charles except for two people: Jamie Foxx, and Ray Charles. Some pretty good filmmaking and ultimately gives you quite a bit of sympathy for a true legend. I has been a while since I watched this, but I remember it being long. Still, good work from the leads.

There's not much here that wouldn't make a standard True Hollywood Story. Jamie Foxx did a very good job in the lead, but that's about all I took away from it. I'm waiting for the biopic on Rick James to come out, or maybe Marvin Gaye; two dudes who pissed everything away, but didn't live long enough to recoup it.
