"As we all know, the movie industry would chug along for a few more years after Ready Player One´s release. At the time, no one would've suspected that the soul of the cinema had died at that exact moment. It was an ironic coincidence that Spielberg, man who once helped usher in the Age of Cinematic Dreams, would now be pallbearer for the Age of Cringey Pandering," the holographic David Attenborough remarked. "Move along now, the Museum Of Dead Things From The Past closes in ten spaceminutes!"

Compulsively playing computer games is the best way of overcoming corporate oppression, but remember not to play them seven days a week: five is sufficient. For those seeking this kind of incisive analysis, and who would like to regress into a cocoon of eighties nostalgia that saves them from ever asking about the real consequences of that regression or that industrially-produced compulsion, this is the corporate product for you, and one more masterpiece of inanity from the master confectioner.

This was just a really good time. I have not read the book, so maybe my opinion doesn't matter too much to the readers. I thought the action was done well enough that I could actually tell what was going on and the visual effects were just as pleasing as the references and nostalgia, all brought compellingly to life by Steven Spielberg. The acting was all great, and I loved the Shining scene. Being someone who loves the 80s, this served justice for me. Worth a watch if you get a chance.

'P-Please Mr. Spielberg', the scientist insisted, it's been in there for too long!'. Steven Spielberg brushed him aside and signalled the control room. A large container labelled Nostalgia Juice' opened. Giant robotic arms produced a manuscript from the noxious fluid and handed it to him. He flipped through page after page of near intelligible letters. It's perfect'. He smiled. His eyes fixated on the faded headline of the wrinkled front page: 'Working title: The Goonies 2

Having read the book first, I was extremely impressed at how many things were changed, yet the story remained faithful in spirit. All the details that were changed were done so to compliment the cinematic format, and being a Spielberg movie, it was a hell of a fun flick too. Interestingly enough, for all of the pop culture references in this movie, it pales in comparison to the book. This thing is about 50% less nerdy. Fun, lots of it, but it's not a meaningful or deep movie.

No charm, nothing, really nothing to say and ultimately poisoned with "oh, the beautiful girl has a scratch in her cute face and the boy becomes the freaking HERO for saying that it's not a freaking PROBLEM for him". How brave! And I don't even want to go into the inability to understand the details and problems of gaming culture this movie has. Spielberg is such a dad. Unable to analyze his own nerdiness or his own black and white worldview. But hey, no gaming Tuesdays and Thursdays, ok?! Gosh!

Phew, I didn’t waste my life absorbing pop culture, I can smirk freely at all the brief cameos. Spielberg getting nostalgic about turning shitty books into great fun. You remember that part in Hook where the fat black kid is stretching back Robin Williams’s face to see the younger face he once knew. That’s what I felt like watching this “There you are Steven “

You can't fault the characters for wanting to live in a virtual world solely constructed by nostalgia and 60 year old pop culture references. Just look at the empty husk of a barely functional plot they've been forced to inhabit. But the filmmakers, especially one S. Spielberg should have known fucking better! The only saving grace was a lovingly recreated The Shining scene, probably due to this being the only presented piece of pop culture Spielberg actually has warm feelings for himself.

Spielberg definitely still knows how to whip up some nifty set-pieces. I took joy in the nostalgic overload of references (the thumbs up gets a major thumbs down, though), and because the film is so excellently paced (also the case with Cline's novel) the lack of exploration of the theme and the underdeveloped characters barely register and are all but forgiven. Also, Spielberg and Silvestri is a great match.

RPO is a thoroughly empty experience that doesnt work on any level, not even a visceral one. It has nothing remotely new or interesting to say about VR and its real world implications, and it's completely vacant on the problem of nostalgia rooted in cheap escapism that encourages perpetual adolescence. It isn't even a good braindead blockbuster. It's just bodies and streaks of light moving quickly across the screen in rapid succession. Movement without meaning, sound without sense.

A moronic film that tries to cover its deficiencies with a lot of asinine references. This movie has no idea how the internet or people who use it function, or how wild the human imagination can be. On top of this, the villains are laughably incompetent and idiotic, the setting doesn't make much sense, and the moral at the end is incredibly moronic. Spielberg directs the movie fairly well and there's some nice spectacle in it, but that doesn't save it from being idiotic trash.

Ready Player One is a reminder of a bygone era both in the constant nostalgic references and in how it feels like one of Spielberg's classic blockbusters. The visual effects are stellar, as is Spielberg's entertaining direction. It might not have the depth some are looking for and the references could bog down the experience for some, but for those looking for an old-school feel in a current big-budget film? This is it.

A better title might be Reference: The Movie. This film has some notable issues; the characters are thinly sketched, some of the acting isn't great and a few of the big emotional or dramatic moments don't land. Despite this Ready Player One is great fun to watch. The action scenes are imaginative and well directed, the pacing doesn't let up and it is consistently engaging to watch. Surprisingly it's also really funny with a number of laugh out loud moments

It's definitely messy and has a few plot holes and, let's be honest, its reference-mania gets a touch cringe here and there. But you know, it's also FUN. Smartphones and adulthood stress and whatnot have made me increasingly antsy during feature films, but I never once felt the slightest inclination to check my watch during this. Crazy also that this is Spielberg's first Silvestri-scored film - the two go together perfectly. Silvestri should maybe just be Spielberg's guy from here on out.

An action film that, for once, is SUPPOSED to look like a video game & the CGI is well made enough to keep this from feeling as long as it actually it is.Unfortunately, as spectacular as its early icon-filled car chase is (and it's the best scene in the film), nothing about it feels as thrilling as anything in Fury Road. Part of the problem is that, unlike the Matrix, characters are safe if their avatar dies. The film's message to spend more time in reality also feels both contradictory & trite

The OASIS is a fun, liberating concept: you can be whoever and do whatever you want with millions of people doing the same. The movie is at its best when it embraces this and lets loose with the pop culture references and crazy setpieces (lord knows Spielberg knows how to shoot those). However there's nothing exciting or interesting about the actual characters or the story, leaving me cold and exhausted by the end. Fun at times but not much more than a bunch of half-baked nonsense.

Bland actors, awfully written main male character, main female character is the flavor of the year variation of the manic pixie dream girl, and the plot is dumb and full of holes and cringeworthy moments. Now that this is out of the way, I really liked the movie. It looked good, had nice worldbuilding. It just felt right. It panders to the nerds of the generation that grew up watching Hackers and War Games, and, well, that's me. +1 point for using Merlin's incantation from the movie Excalibur.

When it works, it works, and Ready Player One works far more often than it doesn't. It's a fun adventure movie that never stops moving and is continually a visual delight. Those two elements alone are enough to make it a decent watch. It has several great sequences, an impressive world to explore, and more pop culture references than you'll be able to count. A bit bloated and maybe too eager to please, but I guess at this point of his career Spielberg still has the knack of delivering state of the art entertainment and convey his old obsessions (orphans and lonely kids looking for refugee in fantasy realms and worlds, a complete disbelief in any form of formal authority). The scenes within The Shining might be the most beautiful cinematic homage ever made.

You'd expect more from Spielberg. This is generic action movie that focuses on visuals and is trying too hard to satisfy audience 7-77 as you could say. Apart from great visuals this doesnt have much. Story is rushed and does not focus on details, characters are shallow and there is no much depth in them, there is no standout performance. All in all, just an ordinary blockbuster going for the cash, without anything special in it. Still cant say it wasnt a fun watch.

Of all the movie dystopias, this is the most frightening: Popular culture comes to a standstill. From the 2020s to 2045, no more entertainment is created and instead, the world becomes obsessed with the trivia of one elderly man's middle-of-the-road tastes. In this world, compared to New Order the BeeGees are considered 'old school' - that's like in 2018, judging Gene Autry to be more old school than Carl Perkins.

It lost some of the geeky-cuteness of the book in order to make it easier to follow and they cut out the best plot trick in the book as it would be hard to pull off in cinema... these are standard adaptation problems. Visually, it was pretty cool; it could have been way cooler with more focus on the grandeur aspects but still it was enjoyable.

Since I'd read the book, I can't comment on the film without comparing. I felt the movie neglected much of the expansiveness of the Oasis (including for not just entertainment) and the unabashed ridiculousness of the characters' absorption in 80's pop-culture. With its simplistic moral, the movie basically apologized for what it did have. Still, I did have fun watching, and I have no complaint about it not being a critical masterpiece. Wished it had a more nostalgic soundtrack.

I thought this was a lot of fun. It's shorter so doesn't hit the books lowest points of consistently reading pop culture references like a grocery list. The movie is not fleshed out in the real world, but it really doesn't matter because this is just a vehicle for pop culture nostalgia and imagination. The leads are likable enough and the easter eggs are fun. A good popcorn movie.

I read the book, and enjoyed the way in which you're put in the protagonist's frame of thought before going on a pop-culture riddled quest with him. The film takes a different but necessary approach of adapting the book as an action-adventure that excels at the action set-pieces, but flounders with the characters and scope of the world and at times the plot. It's entertaining but lacks any impact, reinforcing that Spielberg is past his prime.

Ready Player One reaffirms Steven Spielberg as king of the blockbuster. It's clear to see that a great deal of ambition has gone into making this film happen. And from the outset I was blown away by the staggering visuals and the fan pleasing attention to detail. Some may ask for more depth and less references, but this is a contained film that doesn't have an expanded universe mapped out. This is a throwback to what blockbusters used to feel like and I embraced the experience and enjoyed it.

Enjoyed the references, cultural nods and Easter eggs. Otherwise a formulative youth flick of the in-high-demand fantasy such as Hunger Games, etc. Good, non-forced, female leads and the bit with the haplo suit performance features were enjoyable/hilarious, but too few and far between. Otherwise pretty forgettable and bland. Had a Matrixian flare, but none of the complexity and moral depth. But that is to be expected from a youth film.

All characterization takes a nosebleed back seat to the spectacle, which is primarily harmful to the relationships the film pretends exist: none of them generate any reaction beyond incredulity (it's shocking how poorly they're constructed). The OASIS is fun (maybe more for others, but I'm glad to say I thoroughly enjoyed The Shining visitation), but it's the back-and-forth dynamic between it and reality that's really well done and makes for lots of entertaining action hi-jinks (see the fooling of Sorrento). In the end though, it wastes the potential of its characters (there should be a whole movie made about the tragic Halliday) as well as the deeper reality vs. entertainment theme underlying the sadly neglected dystopian setting.

Spielberg comes of age while revisiting his past lives. One of Spielberg's primary themes has been the escape from reality - dirty, scary, rotten, no-good reality - into internalized fantasy. Fairy tales become enlightenment, Transfiguration. But here he has finally peered into the abyss, and seen the effects of his fan fantasies. This is the only logical explanation for Nolan's change of heart - it is Steven's. I could not help but see Spielberg, not Halliday, walking away with his child self.

Ready Player One is an obvious fantastical autobiography of Stephen Spielberg. And it was fascinating to experience his pain and regrets. But aside from that emotional drama/connection. The film was really another fluff piece that should be just another rock in his his emotional baggage. Not really better or worse than the book, mostly made right decisions in what to keep, discard, or reimagine. The Shining sequence was fun, the race ok, the big battle wasn't exciting. Something approaching commentary could have elevated this: the corporate villain could have ironically been more about cynical exploitation of nostalgia, overly reverent fandom of creations and creators and consumers and their opinion tribal affiliations could have been portrayed as having a downside.

Can't really understand the hate this movie gets from some people. It´s not the newest invention in the book but still entertaining as heck. Sure it feels like someone just did a list with all the popculture references he could find but I don`t have a problem with this and for my part I saw a visually stunning movie with all the figures from movies and games i like and love.

I get it, Spielberg is afraid to die. Ah ah ah. The characters are bland, the actors are unconvincing, but look at my references all around, this is cool right? No. This is a blockbuster checking all the marks, the white male hero gets the white female prize, the supporting cast is diversity because of marketing, and the movie is not even trying to address the problem of mass gaming consumerism, corporations, social inequities
The cyberpunk genre is coughing blood.

Spielberg knows how to make spectacular movies, and this sure was one. I found it entertaining and laughed a couple of times, but I found action scenes too long and the plot too contrived. Overall, it is what it says on the tin.

Too long, from the half-hour finale, it just gets boring and repetitive.

Nostalgia is the coolest thing we can experience as a human being. A throwback to a time where we felt something real. Visually stellar, but it is kinda hard to appease an era of nerds with a story where virtual reality is greater than the reality. Presenting a piece with major CGI sort of negates this message does it not? A solid effort from Spielberg and well acted from the cast. I think the overall message is lost in cyberspace amongst the visuals.

Your typical blockbuster fun action movie with mot a lot else going on. I hope it paves the way for some more thoughtful movies taking on the concept of immersive virtual reality.

Spielberg did it again. he caught the new generation perfectly. but i'm not sure if is this a new film or just reference porn? impossible to catch many of the details, because it's over swift. also plot is generic and difficult to digest at this pace. love story and revolution things are both raw and redundant. it had high capacity in story but we have only watchable production at last.

Watchable but braindead. Reference after reference, for reference's sake and terrible characters. But that's what you get when you adapt a terrible novel and Spielberg has to go all out to save that trainwreck of a plot.

It’s like Suicide Squad and the first 30 mins of Death Note in that it just doesn’t slow down. The pacing is so non stop it’s nearly headache inducing. That being said it’s cool just how many Easter eggs there are, and that rewatching it you’ll probably notice a lot of things you didn’t see before. Good CGI, fun, and creative. But a mediocre story and poorly developed characters resulting in hardly any depth. It’s worth renting and MAYBE worth buying if you’ll get the references.

An average movie with some fun parts. Stephen Spielberg should have done better with this. Not enough of the backstory or IOI's antics and how they got keys as in the also average book. Lots of late 70's/early 80s eye-candy and fun big battle scene.

It feels like a bot formulated this script. A visual spectacle with less than no substance. And the tacked on moral? Reality is real. Come on, Spielberg. Clearly his interests in this are purely technical. Or at least that’s what I hope.

Generally entertaining, but it turns into nonsense as it tries to hammer in some sort of feel-good, positive ending in that classic Spielberg way, which although fits neatly into the whole nostaliga / pop culture vibe as a sort of meta-reference, makes too many instantly-answered revelations that appear important at that moment, but actually are just irrelevant and an attempt to add the illusion of depth to the story.

I am a geek. Hence the target audience of this movie. But that aside the story was fun, the characters were interesting and worldbuilding very solid. On top of all that this is the first movie ever where I was not sure what is CGI and what is real. Still wondering if that one room in shining segment was one or the other..

Pop cultural references seem to work when there's a genuine love of the referenced material, and that's evident here. And while I know little of the gaming world, the tv, music, and movie references were all right up my alley. The second key challenge was one of the most fun and (paradoxically) original things I've seen, too. Just an overall really fun movie and feels like vintage Spielberg.

It is not for everyone to be sure. Those who don't understand or relate to the endless barrage of references to pop culture will find this movie tedious to say the least. For all the rest of us, this is a rousing adventure filled with awesome special effects, a wish-fulfillment story line and some terrific acting.

The book wasn't a masterpiece, but even though the plot was just a vehicle for nostalgia overkill it was really fun to read. Unfortunately the fun-part didn't make it into the movie. Spielberg obviously didn't give a fuck, all the actors were terrible and/or miscast and except for that Shining scene all the changes were for the worse.

They say this movie is packed to the brim with cultural references... but to me there's not much value in the name- or cameo-dropping. Is it really enjoyable just to know that there are 50 pixels of random character X in the background? Wreck it Ralph and the Lego Movies both do this concept in a much more substantial way. Product placement galore. The characters are all very underdeveloped as well. It's a very formulaic adventure romp, and I think a bit too targeted for kids.

I think the graphics were the better part of the movie, ignoring all the human acting. The world I imagined while reading the book was very similar to the one in the movie, which I thought was pretty cool. I think there were too many damn cheesy lines and so-so acting that I don't think this movie is any more deserving than Hunger Games.
