Ratner's version of Red Dragon serves little purpose other than to transplant Hopkins' portrayal of Lecter into a story that Michael Mann had already done better many years before. Ratner adds a few ideas of his own: the use of the intro as a silent expository device and the cinematography centered around the characters' eyes. Neither makes up for the bland cinematography, perfunctory acting, or Ratner's tendency to adapt seemingly-randomly-picked scenes from the book without understanding them.

Trying to one-up Manhunter is impossible, so I'm thankful Ratner and company didn't attempt to do so. Red Dragon is something else entirely, sacrificing style for grim brutality and some genuinely great performances from Fiennes and Hoffman. Though, you can really feel how desperately they tried to force more Lecter into a story that doesn't need it.

Most of the film is a great investigation/psychological thriller that should be proud to belong in the "Silence" trilogy, unfortunately this is undermined by an extremely "hollywood" ending that was entirely unnecessary in that it completely ruined pretty fair development of Dollarhyde. Also, I agree that Hopkins' just isn't as terrifying as he was in Silence since it isn't "fresh" but Norton, Hoffman, Watson, Fiennes, and Harvey Keitel are great. That's most of the principal cast.

Jonathan Demme. Ridley Scott. Brett Ratner? Shockingly enough, the by far less prestigious director in the lucrative horror franchise delivers the goods much more efficiently than his predecessor and the campy "Hannibal", without, of course, ever even approaching the heights of the original "Silence". "Red Dragon" is a perfectly serviceable thriller, with an impressive cast and competent direction. Hopkins may be reduced to merely a creepy presence, but this doesn't mar the film's enjoyability.

Red Dragon is a movie that does an adequate job of copying the plot from The Silence of the Lambs, but doesn't bring anything fresh or original to the table. It has far more negatives than positives -- particularly in the rendering of Hannibal Lecter, which is actually kind of sad and disheartening -- and it's just retreading old territory. I know that the novel came before, but there was no reason to make this movie. Not even Anthony Hopkins can salvage it.

Proof that critics & fanboys can let their feelings cloud their judgement. A very-good film (far more faithful to the novel than Manhunter by the way), was unduly panned due to 3 things: critics& fanboys let their not-always justifiable hatred for Brett Ratner(only constant hatred of Michael Bay is justified) spill over to the film; the justifiable annoyance at the blatant $$-grabbing that was occurring by "remaking" the wildly overpraised Manhunter; & following SOTLambs is always deadly.

Another solid entry into a solid franchise. Needless to say miles away from Silence of the Lambs, but on par with Hannibal - albeit, again, very different. Hopkins is not quite as menacing as in the previous two films - although still great - but the spectacular remainder of the cast make up for it plenty: Emily Watson is very convincing, Keitel and Philip Seymour bring a firm side presence, with Fiennes and Norton doing their magic - above and beyond the expectations. Very entertaining.

Enjoyable SILENCE prequel is more of a flashy genre piece than its predecessors, thanks mostly to Ratner's functional but unremarkable direction. Impressive cast does much to elevate the film, with Hopkins' deliciously spoofy performance still overshadowed by Fiennes' and Watson's heartbreaking courtship, though many of the other actors appear to be included for their name value only.

Suspenseful enough to keep you watching, but that's about it. Forgettable immediately upon its completion. The cast isn't bad, but the characters are largely shallow and unconvincing. Direction, cinematography, and audio are functional, nothing more or less. Almost feels like it was made to be cut up with commercials and shown on cable TV.

Fiennes is very good actor but badly miscast as the musclebound giant who feels so ugly no living person could ever love him. I've read the book and seen Manhunter too (interesting, different flaws), and I know a lot of the problem is in the character's head but come on... Casting someone as A) Handsome & B) Slight as Fiennes in this role seems almost willfully perverse. Ed Norton is OK. I think I would have liked this version but with the 3 leads from Manhunter. (W.G. The first and most terrifying chapter of the hannibal trilogie. Very psychologically terrifying. I can't imagine how I would totally freak out when I enter my house and see the mirror is smashed. This film has some briliant scenes and an amazing cast. The cameramovement is very well done, the music's really attached to the movie and Hopkins and Norton are just awesome, just like the rest. Great, and a great ending and opening to the Silence of the Lambs.

Red Dragon is a solid film by Brett Ratner's standards and is surprisingly better than Ridley Scott's rather dull 'Hannibal'. As a standalone thriller I found this film enjoyable and engaging. But when compared to the original masterpiece that started it all, this prequel feels average and unnecessary. Hopkins gives another good performance but feels slightly on auto pilot and parodistic of himself. However the supporting cast of Norton, Fiennes, Keitel, Watson and Seymour Hoffman is stellar.

I'm sure Anthony Hopkins still has fun with this role, but Lecter has turned into a parody of himself. He's not clever, or intelligent, or frightening. And really, he does very little here. Surprisingly good, even though I prefer the original Manhunter. It's all really just a matter of personal preference. Ed Norton is far superior to William Peterson in the leading role, but where Tom Noonan was the utterly chilling highlight of the original, and really anchored the story, Ralph Fiennes - partially due to the expanded role of the titular dragon in this script - is nowhere near as frighteningly intense.
