Much worse than I remembered. The movie peaks at the beginning bathhouse scene where Ahnold fucks up some other nude Russians. Then, the film just bumbles along in a generic buddy cop style with ZERO one-liners to make the ride worthwhile. Surprisingly DULL.

Schwarzenegger is about as Russian as I am Austrian (I apologize if any of my undead ancestors are Austrian), and Belushi is about as believable as a Chicago cop as...okay, he's actually pretty believable as a Chicago cop. But still.

I wasn't expecting a masterpiece, because Jim Belushi, but this was surprisingly bad. It's not funny, at all (sample joke: "How do you relax in Russia?" "Vodka."), the plot is so generic I just didn't care at all what was happening, and the action doesn't make up for it; it's really poorly staged and geographically very confusing. The (in theory awesome) bus chase at the end is just a mess. I wanted to come away from this saying it was OK except for Belushi, but it really wasn't.

Red Heat is a below average Arnold Schwarzenegger film and it's one of his most underwhelming roles of the 80's. There are a handful of enjoyable moments but his chemistry with an unfunny James Belushi just doesn't work. And as buddy cop films go this is one of the most forgettable. It's by no means Walter Hill's finest work either. All in all it's just very average.

The last time I saw this was probably over 30 years ago when seeing an R Rated Schwarzenegger movie as a teen was enough to impress me. Watching it for the first time since I was surprised at how poor this is. While marketed as Buddy Cop action film, there is no entertaining chemistry of any kind between the two leads. In fact Belushi adds nothing of consequence to the film and Red Heat probably would have worked better as a tighter straight up Arnie actioner if they cut Belushi entirely.

Surprisingly serious in tone, for the better-the odd couple buddy cop comedy (see Danko after the interrogation: "Soviet method is more economical") is merely sprinkled tastefully throughout what is an actually quite solid and well-paced crime thriller set in the gritty streets of Chicago. Nothing crazy (you know, aside from the climactic bus chase), just solid scenes of detective work and bad guy chases. And there's some subtle character development too (see the humorous final gift exchange).
