I'm always confusing this with Mission to Mars: RP=Carrie Ann Moss showers, MTM=Don Cheadle grows a beard. RP=nearly everyone killed, MTM=almost everyone killed. RP=Val Kilmer flips off a planet, MTM=there's always time for Van Halen breakout number. There ya go, I just saved you four hours.

Some cliche movie points but I thought it was an interesting take on a subject that's been done a few times before. I didn't find it great but I didn't find it nearly as bad as it is widely claimed to be.

It's rather unique, and intriguing, with enough on-goings to keep you quite interested. Anyone who says it's forgettable is suffering from serious memory loss problems, and should see a doctor immediately.

I was going to write about the massive incompetence throughout, and how the movie tried to incorporate so many story lines that eventually none of them worked, but I think I'll just leave this quote from NASA about why they didn't work on this: "The science was just so off the wall that eventually we felt, 'You guys go ahead and make your movie.' If there's something that's going to be so misleading to the public that we don't want to participate, then we'll say no."

Good sci-fi that gets you thinking. Pretty solid visuals and pacing with solid acting.

The "Red Planet" is overdramatic with contrived disasters that keep getting more ridiculous as the film progresses.

There have been a lot of failed movies about Mars. This one is fairly boring, even though there is some grave danger that everyone seems to be in. I can't force myself to remember plot details.

Little tension, less suspense. Anthony Hoffman does a wonderful job of making Mars as boring as the Australian outback.

Finally a sci-fi flick that delivers! Hardware, techno-babble, smart resourceful characters, action, thrills & a stack of interesting situations unfolding together. Decent laughs, effects & almost always in the realm of reasonable. This is no M2M2, this is a real movie. Go.

The story-telling here is a bit heavy handed and rushed. More time should definitely have been taken in helping us identify with and care about the characters here. It's not a terrible concept or a terrible story so far as SciFi goes, but it is inhabited with people who do little more than fill the space where people need to be.

Watched this recently with Mission to Mars as part of a 'kill-my-own-brain' ploy, this is infinitely better but still pretty bad, some nice spacey special effects type stuff, that's about it.

Above average science fiction flick about the end of earth an the need to populate mars in order to survive. Bunch of scientists go up an check out mars, and of course everything goes terribly wrong. The cast gives great performances and really do their best at making the story come to life. The fx are decent, the story/script, tho often predictable, had its moments. A recommendation for anyone who likes sci fi , or is a fan of Val's work.

You know I didn't think it was awful. Not good, but not awful. Val suffering from hypoxia was pretty terrifying, but that is a serious space-related phobia of mine. Remember, phobia=IRRATIONAL.

This film gets a lot of undeserved hate. It has an interesting premise, convincing special effects, a very strong cast, and a couple of great scenes. The soundtrack is for the most part poorly chosen. Still, if you are looking for a space-based, slow-burn thriller, Red Planet isn't a bad choice.

It wasn't awful. But it sure wasn't good either. And the CGI sucked big time. People underrate this movie as they expect accurate sci-fi and get a thriller instead. It was stupid but fine as a thriller. Increased the score by 10% for the little russian mascot on the computer.

Got this confused with Mission to Mars and expected something different. In the end you get a B grade sci-fi movie that is pretty slow going. Val Kilmer is quite weird in this role and the opening and closing monologues are kinda stupid. Most of the deaths are pretty weak.

One of those curious enigmas in which two films with strikingly similar premises come out the very same year, with no clear linkage (Red Planet's convenient peer is De Palma's Mission to Mars and I refuse to believe its coincidence). The score is horribly dated, it suffers from an overreliance on CGI, and it has a silly "robot-dog gone wrong" sub-plot that's borderline superfluous; but otherwise, it's a fun little space-survival romp that's generally funny when it fails.

Well-produced sci-fi raises some interesting existential questions, but unfortunately fails to follow through on them - an odd dramatic disconnect sets in once the action moves to the titular planet, not helped once Stamp disappears from the film; he gives far and away the most lively performance. Kilmer is far too low-key to sustain the drama on the ground, and the odd inclusion of a robot antagonist almost feels like a ring-in attempt to spice up the drama a bit. Watchable on its own terms.
