Having seen Starlet & The Florida Project, Red Rocket cements Baker's penchant for the porn industry & low-income Americans. With a straightforward plot but a lack of distinct motivation, the film feels somewhat empty. Baker gets good performances from his cast, but the characters are not good people. The underlying sadness that runs through the film is the most interesting aspect; alongside Bye Bye Bye marking a people left in the past. Overall a little too long & the last act misses the mark.

If you'd like to feel uncomfortable for two hours, this is the film for you. Mikey Saber earned a spot in the Movie Scumbag Hall of Fame. Still not enough to knock Uncle Frank from Home Alone off of his throne, though. The Oscars should give out awards for best use of a song, because this would win.

I don’t know if it’s quite on the same level as Florida, but this is still another winner from Baker - wickedly hilarious and completely horrible, with a magnetically despicable lead played to perfection by Rex. The best reference points I’ve seen are Uncut Gems and the second half of Boogie Nights, but the final result is all Baker.

Much lesser than The Florida Project but maintains some of the stuff that made that one great. A small story that dedicates time to subject matter that isn't frequently explored. Baker also knows how to shoot a movie and I especially love how he incorporates colour--it makes the film feel more vibrant even as there's a pretty seedy underbelly to the whole thing. Rex is good playing an unbearable character. Wish the comedy and drama was more effective, though I did laugh a few times.

It was almost as amusing as it was annoying. Suzanna Son saved this with her incredibly cute smile and gorgeous young body. The entire situation was about as low life as it gets. The guy lived the high life as a porn star until he washed out broke and homeless. I disliked the final scenes and the uncertainty of what happened with Mickey and the coming of age Strawberry. Perhaps they are planning a Red Rocket 2?

Sean Baker is shaping up to be a great filmmaker. In Red Rocket, Texas gets the same treatment as Florida and California did in his previous films; but Mikey Saber (beautifully embodied by Simon Rex) is Baker's best character yet. He is deplorable and yet endearing, like something out of the Dardennes.

Viewed January 16, 2022. Unflinching, very funny, surprisingly abrasive. Everything that's good about Red Rocket flows through Simon Rex's astounding performance. The news reports heard throughout the film are clunky in execution, but I liked how they frame Mikey's hucksterism within the larger sociopolitical culture of America, a place where people are continually climbing the ladder and then pulling the ladder up behind them.

Uncomfortable but realistic relationship. I experienced a lot of deja vu of the character who comes into town and manipulates everything for his own benefit---maybe someone can remind me of what other film had this theme (Good Time had a similar guy who turns everything to shit)? Not as memorable as Tangerine or Florida Project, but Sean Baker has another hit here. Fav scene: Rex woken up and evicted but tough guy gets all sketched out by Rex's nakedness.

Oh, I just love spending time with a toxic charismatic Sean Baker character while he destroys the lives of everyone else around him as he tries to 'make it', even if it means convincing a girl into porn, a friend to not involve him in the accident he helped him cause or his ex-wife that he just needs to crash there for a few days, when actually it's just some time to breathe while he prepares his comeback. There is no American dream, just vampires and losers.

The bucket goes to the well until it breaks. And then it just finds a trashier well to go to. Everyone vote for Mikey Saber, he tells it like it is.

Did you hear Al Pacino just had another kid at 83 years old? And did you know his girlfriend who just had that kid is only 29? And did you know that she's four years younger than Pacino's eldest daughter? Oh, and did you hear Robert De Niro just another kid at 79 years old? And did you know that his girlfriend is six years younger than his oldest child? No idea why that's what I'm thinking about after watching this movie. Anyway, you can keep fucking, I guess, but please stop having children

How can Simon Rex still be likable when his character is just a pile of shit?

Fits snugly into Baker's growing filmography of adventures in America's underbelly. On first impression this felt more subdued and polished than his last two films, which isn't necessarily a bad thing and certainly makes this his most rewatchable film to date.

Full of the kind of manic energy Mikey possesses, and the more on-the-streets kind of filmmaking approach makes sure everyone is operating within the same energy. Baker expounds on the simultaneous joys and horrors of this kind of lower class living, in all the crevices of the characters and the locations.

Sean Baker did it again. Red Rocket is unique. Simon Rex is a tremendous choice, the character he plays belongs to him, it couldn't be anyone else.

This movie is just not entertaining...like at all. Yeah, Simon Rex puts in a good performance, but beyond that it's entirely lacking in nearly every other aspect. Why should I care about an unfunny comedy where trashy people act trashy? The ending is really the cherry on top of this shit sundae. Its a complete mess, and they left everything open-ended so the POS protagonist doesn't even get a decent comeuppance.

Has some good moments, but didn't quite reach the heights I've been reading about. Rex was great as a manic lowlife and some of the lesser actors did alright as well. I know they had locals playing some of the roles here to boot. Enjoyed a few of the comedic moments that were thrown in. 6.0 for me. It's not bad, but it's not at all polished either, nor is it really trying to be I suppose.

flipped-script modern Lolita retelling is breathtaking (filmed in Texas, natch), marvelously acted by a formidable band of amateurs and [checks notes] one-third of comedy-rap trio Three Loco

Sıradışı ve komikti. Gerçek hayat gibi. Evine 15 sonra dönen yakışıklı erkeğimiz, gittiği iş başvurularından hepsi olumsuz yanıt alır. Porno yıldızı olduğunu öğrendikten sonra, parayı torbacılıkla idare eder. Bu arada, donut dükkanında 17 yaşında kıza aşık olur. Kurgu harika. Sanki 1 kitap okuyor gibi izliyoruz. Simon Rex ve Sean Baker iyi ikili olmuşlar. Filmin sonunda, çıplak vatandaşımızı kandırdılar. Öyle gitmek yok. Karpuz keseceğim. Hey baby I'm pornostar.

"Red Rocket" is a skillfully crafted film featuring an impressive screenplay. However, its narrative leans towards melancholy, centering around a protagonist whose influence in your life leads to distress. Its depiction of life in Texas for a struggling hustler is unflinchingly honest, devoid of any comforting sentiments.
