Dolph Lundgren plays a Soviet spy who fails his mission to assassinate an African rebel leader, and ultimately decides to team up with the freedom fighters to expel the Communist occupation. Awesome 80s macho cheese with tons of explosive war action and corny jokes, plus shirtless Dolph hanging out with some Bushmen. They blew up a significant chunk of Africa to make this film.

It practically begs to be watched on pirate VHS copy, like many late 80's action films do. It's something of a middle road as cheesy action films go - not a classic, but still very much watchable (if you're into this kind of thing). The priceless moment here is that boyish smile of Dolph. Shirtless, sweaty Dolph in short shorts. That bushman he's hanging out with is real, actual 95 year old bushman. This spiritual journey plot device adds so much depth to the film.

I had quite high hopes for this as it stars Dolph Lundgren shortly after Rocky IV and is directed by Joseph Zito, who had earlier made Invasion USA and Prowler. Too bad this film is too long, slow and simply not entertaining enough to work as a 80's action film. It seems to aim for something higher than your standard action fare but it's just too silly to be considered as a serious film. The uncut version is overkill at 105 mins.

Red Scorpion is one of Dolph Lundren's first action films and it's one of his worst also. I watched this as a kid and I remember enjoying it. But more recently I watched it and I couldn't believe how awful it is. There's a handful of enjoyable scenes with Dolph running round with machine guns and blowing everything and everyone up. But otherwise this is completely forgettable and ultimately it's a poor mans Rambo.

It's basically an inverted Rambo III with the same goal of negatively portraying Soviet adventurism in the Third World, made with the help of apartheid South Africa and shady money funneled through infamous lobbyist Jack Abramoff. There's a few elements missing from this that prevents Red Scorpion from being a bona fide 80's classic, foremost among them Lundgren in general being a blank slate, as well as a lack of memorable visceral violence.

I had no idea what Dolph Lundgren was saying for the entire movie. I need to be able to relate to my (anti?-)heroes and there was nothing to relate to in this protagonist. He wasn't even given a motivation for doing the things that he does. I didn't know what the stakes were, so I couldn't get invested in any of the action on screen. Was the action good? IDK. I spaced out because the movie didn't make me care.

The first half has solid one liners and fun character chemistry supplied with simple but solid action scenes. The second half is this boring attempt to redeem Dolph's character through some lame spiritual journey which wasn't necessary because they had already established solid enough context for his betrayal and it ends up sucking out all the personality of the film had. By that point, I lost all investment in the final act which itself did nothing to engage me.

Very generic feeling action picture. Takes me back to when I was about ten years old, which is to say there is a lot to cringe at. There's some kind of comfort food in here and a bunch of ludicrous one-liners. By the time Lundgren gets to the 'bushmen' we're in pitiable territory indeed. Good production value is mostly unwarranted and superfluous.
