If you're thinking of giving this a try because of the J-law nudity, I should point out that that scene (and indeed this entire "erotic thriller") is about as sexy as a translucent plastic bag full of vomit. Which would be tolerable if the movie delivered on the thriller part, but unfortunately it's about as exciting as listening to people complaining about this heat. It's hot out. We get it.

So this ballerina breaks her leg, and in order to continue paying for her flat, and helping her disabled mum, her uncle suggests she becomes a spy. She goes to spy school where she learns that she can use her body to get what she wants (like she needed telling!). Her 1st job involves seducing a US agent and learning the identity of the Russian traitor he is shielding. So far so good, but it tries too hard to be convoluted and interesting, and just falls apart from the complexities and absurdity

Tedious spy thriller is an overlong, unwieldy mix of DRAGON TATTOO and BRIDGE OF SPIES; attractively photographed, and starts out interestingly enough, but falls to pieces once it becomes reliant on the (non-existent) chemistry between Lawrence and Edgerton; perhaps the most egregious waste of an excellent cast in recent memory, with Irons, Rampling, Parker et al left floundering with underwritten roles; exploitative and ugly violent material leaves a bad aftertaste.

Jennifer Lawrence is a tremendous plus for this movie. Joel Edgerton was also good as were many others. The brutal Russian spy organization is on full display here with dog eat dog politics. The story has a few wonderful twists and turns, and leaves the door open for a remake. This is a sexy suspenseful movie of intrigue and danger. Effective and entertaining, but not without flaws. Most of the mood is thoroughly dark with a lot of tragedy and hardship. Extra points for Lawrence revealed.

It's not exactly a traditional crowd-pleaser, being a more realistic examination of spycraft as being about gathering information, developing assets, listening devices and moles and payoffs and a whole lot of fucking than the shootouts/chases/fights seen in Bourne and Bond and Kingsman. But I'd say I found it interesting and enjoyed its more thoughtful pace mixed with a bunch of lurid perversity. I don't think I've seen a movie with this many sex scenes in theaters in four or five years.

An inexperienced female spy is tasked with seducing a CIA agent in this perfectly serviceable if entirely unspectacular thriller. The movie is definitely hurt by a weak lead performance by Jennifer Lawrence, blandly staring at the camera for extended takes, and the fact that she has no chemistry at all with the guy she's meant to be seducing. This drastically undercuts the tension in the script that the director is clearly trying to translate to the screen. Oh well, nice boobs at least.

I'm not sure how "realistic" this is (the spy whore sex lessons stretch credulity), but if being a Russian spy is anything like this, why would any sane person sign up? I'm sure I'm naive, but I spent the film disturbed by the idea that a government can function for so long by motivating its citizens primarily through fear. There are no thrills or suspense here, only wince-inducing violence & it's joyless to watch a lead who's only increasingly miserable, but might be working for the bad guys,

My only complaint is that it's too long with not enough content to justify it. But this is still quite good; mature, nice dichotomy between sex and brutality, good acting, interesting plot, different than most spy movies, good soundtrack. Just trim it or write more into it because the pacing does not work well with the length at times.

With its slower pace and focus on the mundane, Red Sparrow is a bit odd compared to typical spy thrillers. Surprisingly, these differences make it good because they allow for a different breed of character development that feels deeper, consequently giving Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Lawrence some great material that they use to the fullest. This slow pace also allows the breadcrumbs for the film's climax to be left in plain sight without the audience knowing, giving it a good surprise factor.

Sexual assault never needs to be shown, and this is almost two hours of it in different degrees and forms. Additionally, it fails to be a very good character study - relying on a disabled mother to be the end all and be all of character and motivation - or spy drama, as Edgerton’s American and the connection of the protagonists are nothing but boring. Its patience, colour (consistent touches of red), and central performance are decent - just not enough to make this interesting.

It looks decent and has a good cast, tho in some cases underused, so it's competently enough made to pass the time. But even for a slow- burner spy movie leading to the inevitable twist with an umpteenth cross there is too little suspense. Making it utterly forgettable.

The back half of Red Sparrow is a better than average KGB thriller. The front half...geez. I'm all for for pulp, but gratuitous sexual violence that doesn't really have any point is savage. You can get me to root for her without destroying her multiple times.

If you're in the right mood, it's immensely entertaining. It's like a succession of brutal-manipulation-revenge-porn fantasies, with very high production values and a couple of good actors. The fatuous observations it offers on human nature along the way are hilarious, if you don't think about them much (or if you do...this is where ones mood comes into play). The various attempts at Russian accents are fairly amusing, too. As a spy thriller... well, Justin Haythe ain't no John Le Carré.

More grounded than the Charlize Theron one from last year, less watchable. Jennifer Lawrence face digitally implanted onto a ballerina or other body doubles later on is not a draw. Maybe some other plot element or character or outstanding set piece would have made this worthwile. (Was there an Angelina Jolie Russian spy movie from a few years back also?)

Once it gets over its 1st act sex assassin exploitation bit it's a boring thriller. Will they or won't they get their guy? Will the sparrow remain loyal or not? Will I have the endurance to watch this paper thin intrigue play out over 90 minutes on an emotional flatline? Well, I did, sort of, but that doesn't mean you have to.

Red Sparrow just another mediocre spy-thriller that relies too heavily on its double/triple/quadruple bluff and its lacklustre performances. J-Law's nudity can't make up for that Russian accent. The film is over-long, the characters are unsympathetic and the plot frankly isn't that gripping. On hindsight, I should have just rewatched Enemy of the State (1998), which feels more relevant and realistic than this "thriller".

The movie is pretty long and feels even longer. Otherwise pretty great in every regard. Especially Jennifer Lawrence and the score. With all the Liam-Neeson-on-a-vehicle-running-around-punching-people-"thrillers", it's just great to see one that is actually suspenseful and subtle and clever and stuff. I know the Liam Neesons ones are obviously much better suited for mass audiences, but movie enthusiasts rarely get a treat like this nowadays. Loved the knife fight. :) Accents didn't bother me.

The plot was decent, the twists were predictable but well written, the acting was acceptable but a bit wooden at times. Please, Hollywood, stop with the fake russian accents in english, and with the automatic russian = bad / american = good bullshit every time there's a russian character in an american movie. It's cringeworthy and creates a stupid stereotype that people actually believe.

Despite the directors best efforts to make this *special* and *unique* right at the very end, it felt contrived and outdated. For a movie that does not hold back with the exploitation of gratuitous violence and sexuality, it certainly could have taken a bolder direction and left with a statement. Not that it would have helped the other aspects of its mediocrity.

This was about 500% more naked Jennifer Lawrence than I expected to see. That's a feature, not a complaint. I think I under-appreciate spy thrillers. Red Sparrow is uncomfortable in a number of places, but I mean that in a good way; those scenes have impact. J-Law's one scene in particular where she "takes power" from a fellow recruit is her ultimate badass moment in this movie. Some accents were much worse than others. Give me a good story that is also erotically charged, you have my attention.

Poor Jennifer Lawrence. RED SPARROW puts her through the wringer as an injured prima ballerina-turned-Russian sex spy, and asks her to sell some very dubious material. Her talent stands out in what amounts to kompromat for nearly everyone else, all of them stuck in an erotic thriller where the sex is either pedestrian or icky, and the intrigue is mostly convoluted and tedious.

Alright, so first I thought I was in for the real fifty shades meets Mother Russia. As Red Sparrow progressed and realised more and more most paid critics are daft as most of recent Marvel's and DC's outings, I couldn't help but think once more "good for you Gideon, leave them idiots be. Do not trust their word, ever again", Slight exaggerating aside, no screw that, not taking it back. RS is a slow burner, the only gripe I really have is that it's too short. Quite the '18 gem. Go and see it.

Red Sparrow is a spy thriller that loses a lot of the goodwill it tries to build because it's too long and paced too leisurely. The plot is, in theory, pretty decent, the acting is strong, it's often pretty, the score is great, and it's nice to see it not shy away from its more mature content. But it's overlong and understuffed, and that takes away from the majority of suspense and atmosphere it hopes to achieve, effectively rendering it a waste.

Full disclosure: I fucking hate Jennifer Lawrence, but I fucking love Joel Edgerton. This is surprisingly decent for the first hour and a half, though it can be plodding at times and could have about 30 minutes edited out to make it flow better. The end though...what the fuck? Fucking spy movies ruining everything with seven layers of convolution. Way to ruin a mediocre thing.

When her dance career comes to an end, a Russian ballerina goes to whore school, acquires a magic pussy (this is literally what the film says), and becomes a super-spy. By turns prurient, sadistic and ludicrous, but above all, boring. Perhaps the most amusing aspect is the decision to get Matthias Schoenaerts to base his character on a Putin impersonation. What comes across more than anything is how much the filmmakers yearn for those glorious Cold War days.

A very mixed bag here. It has a compelling plot with interesting characters but in being a spy story, falls too much on the exploitation side in the beginning and then kind of drags on in the middle section. It looks good, but just just feels hollow. Also, I can never get over the silly accents in movies like this. Zero chemistry between the people who are supposed to be the main romantic pair. Joel Edgerton has zero charisma in this movie, he's had better roles.

Pretty intense in some parts (to the point of feeling exploitative), and whenever Rampling or Irons is on screen it feels like a top tier Le Carre adaptation. Confession time: I've never liked Jennifer Lawrence. I can't recall a single film to mind where I thought she was anything more than competent. Matthias Schoenaerts is the real star here. Overall (except for Schoenaerts), the acting suffers heavily from bad accents and forced stoicism. The story is predictable, but well-paced. The forgetful soundtrack actually makes this film stand out in a positive way.
