Redeeming Love

Why make a movie about sex trafficking if you are squeamish about the subject matter? This reads like an Hallmark attempt at making a period film of a prostitute and her wannabe lover. Very sanitised and melodramatic where it should have been gritty and level-headed.

Despite some pleasing visuals and a standout performance from Nina Dobrev, "Redeeming Love" struggles to blend its Christian sentiment with its sordid events, creating a confusing and awkward film. With average filmmaking and performances unable to elevate the material, the movie is pretty irredeemable.

Ok, I’ll start with the bad: the script needed a bit of work, but when it really counted, there were some very memorable moments and the ties to the book of Hosea were clear. Lewis’s accent pulled him way down, better when not talking. Cowan knocked it out of the park! Directing made for quite a few cringe moments, but also some amazing moments later on. The story and themes- how can you find something more meaningful and beautiful? Visuals are well crafted too!
