It has an interesting and dynamic story, great locations and it's clearly the template for the gangster movie genre. But I didn't enjoy it all that much. It's been done so much better that this feels creaky and simplistic and lacks the emotional depth it tries to rely on. The performances are fine, but nothing special. And the intertitles are either tedious information dumps or meager descriptions of things that would be better off shown. It's just not very engaging.

Highly influential but kinda boring.

what begins as a simple and well-told story about a man whose violent youth led him to gangsterism begins to unravel once it starts to throw in too many things, from a bunch of silly moralising to an out-of-the blue boat sinking that no-one mentions ever again.

Wonderful, expressive acting by Fellowes and some thematic and moralistic daring drive Walsh's gangster drama. That Regeneration is pre-Capone is the film's most fascinating element, and watching a genre in its infancy unfold in such unexpected ways is thrilling stuff.

Decent, though nowhere near as serious a film as its reputation might suggest. It's a familiar sort of redemption story (here based on the "autobiography" of a certain boxer-turned-novelist), dressed up with uneven attempts at slummy atmosphere and a couple large but not especially good action sequences (including a rather silly police raid of the sort where 50 men pile into two cars). Still, the strong lead performances and good use of location bear things up quite a bit.

This is interesting for historical reasons, both in film and generally, as it's filmed on location in the Bowery of New York with lots of actual hoodlums and people from the area playing characters, kind of like in a neorealist film. It's interesting to see the bad areas of New York in this time period. It's also maybe the first significant gangster film of any kind. The movie itself, though, is just okay.
