Hertzfeldt is a connoisseur of the bizarre. This short looks like family information for some humanoid intelligent race that eats a lot of mushroom. It's weirdness is not forced in any way (the same can't be said for Burton nowadays).

Dunno why this is on criticker, since (imho) it's right up the alley with other internet-famous shortvids á la Charlie the unicorn (which is awesome i might add!). Nonetheless it's pretty damn funny if this is your kind of humour. MY ANUS IS BLEEDING!

The six Family Learning Channel shorts are mediocre on the whole but include two good ones. The five commercial segments are even worse and only one is okay. And the final short is okay but still nothing exceptional. Rejected.

Look. He's taking his first steps. This short is not meaningless. It demonstrates what happens when outside influences (like commercialism) and time/creative constraints interfere with art.

A bunch of silly cartoons that are by themselves quite funny but a slightly linear narration, that reflects the author's own frustration, adds to the overall humour and depth of the short film. Certainly violent, although it's merely graphic cartoon violence so you can't take it serious, and most certainly very, very funny.

The only way I can enjoy this is to presume that the "lol so random XD" humor of the vignettes is an intentional device to catch his target audience off guard. The destruction of his own pointless and unfunny universe carries some real weight, but it's a tough road to get there. I dunno, this kinda flirts with greatness but doesn't fully resonate with me.

Reaches a very specific audience, but those of us that enjoy this kind of humor (mostly random & non-sensical) will find a few minutes of hilarity. The ending is unexpectedly meta and a little frightening, showing the degression of the artist's self-esteem and sanity. These quick segments provide plenty of quotable material and the success of this short film (an Academy award nomination) ironically influenced real-life commercials, including a campaign by PopTarts with a very similar art style.

Contains the "random" humour that encapsulates most of the animation on the internet (for better or for worse), but is justified because of its context. The ending animated sketch is cool, but kinda doesn't make much sense to me in the grand scheme of this short animated flick, but this is still quite a funny and original commentary on selling out.
