From the opening moment it picks a tone and doesn't abandon it for a second, until maybe the end, which is incredibly sad and unexpected for a horror movie. There's no light here, it oozes a tense atmosphere. Jump scares are almost non-existent and it's more of a horror-tinged drama than a horror movie. I'm good with that, it was different. Doesn't explain anything, the performances aren't always great but mostly decent, and James shows she's got a competent eye, even if the visuals didn't wow.

There's a very good horror concept here, though it gets suffocated under terrible acting, completely stock dialogue, and a utterly derivative horror style (ie plenty of darkness, saturation, and little colour), but its own horror world that it unveils is absolutely inconsistent and follows no rules because it invents none to follow. Nevin elevates this material, especially with what is admittedly a hard-hitting ending.

The soundtrack was overflowing with hauntingly dramatic clamoring sounds without purpose. The action was mostly nonsensical. Incredibly obscure plot. Asinine storytelling. The soundtrack was impressive, but it didn't fit the action. The girl trapped inside the house was worse than stupid. I lost my patience trying to understand this ridiculous mess. Performances were superb. But this was nearly a pointless waste of time. The special effects at the end was shameful and ludicrous.

Takes awhile to actually get going but the second half of this movie is really cool.

Sure, drawing parallels to ageing and dementia was good and all, but I'm even more impressed by that soundtrack and sound design which might've been the most unsettling I've heard in a while!

A very slow methodical directorial debut from Natalie James. Not much scares me with horror movies, but make a movie about growing older and Alzheimer's and yea...you'll fuck me up. There are some plot points that feel underdeveloped, even though they serve their metaphorical purpose. The shots are safe. But its still a frighting look at growing older and features fantastic body and spooky room horror later on.

I am very in the middle on this one. I understand why the critics liked it and viewers were meh about it. Too much symbolism is not the cinema i like, but in no way it is a bad film. So, very in the middle. If you like symbolism and art films, go for it. If you like more classic cinema, it might leave you a bit hanging.

Oh man, I really enjoyed this film, which was actually very deep and meaningful because of how metaphorical the film tends to be when it revolves around old age and things like dementia - and how things like that can affect not only those that have it, but those around them, as well. Beautiful horror film.

Interesting attempt to tie the literal horrors of ageing and dementia to a haunted house story is decently atmospheric (especially initially), but never really takes off as it should, largely because the interrelationships between the three generations of women are never explored, except in the abstract (all the more painful as all three are fine, with Nevin brilliant). Leads to a murky final third where it is difficult to follow what is happening, though the final shot is a savage gut punch.

Enjoyed the moods of this one! I watch quite a bit of horror and a lot of it either falls flat on its face right at the start or starts out promising, just to fizzle out in the middle. But Relic does have those moods that I like, the slow, creeping horror that doesn't come from jump scares or gore but rather from the eerie mood it builds. Feeling a sense of dread while watching horror should be kind of given, right?

Dementia happens to the elderly. But going to extremes as peeling their skin without dying is just absurd. The movie's title should have been The Madhouse, The House with Many Rooms, Mad Women, Nincompoops' Labyrinth or Hallucinations. What a waste! MY SCORING: 99-96=Great; 95-90=Very good; 89-85=Good; 84-80=So-so; 79-70=Boring; Below 70=Forget it

The first twenty minutes would’ve greatly benefited from being more character oriented instead of building atmosphere. The film does gradually get much better though throughout its runtime. Like “Mother!”, its story is kinda lackluster, with all of the good stuff coming from the (pretty obvious) allegory. It’s not great as a horror film, but as a dark drama with something to think about, it’s pretty solid. Mostly just recommended as a rental to fans of “Mother!”.

The film's ability to evoke strong emotions and provide a unique perspective on the impact of dementia is commendable, but its controversial portrayal of the dementia sufferer and pacing issues may not resonate with everyone. Nevertheless, "Relic" is a thought-provoking and haunting exploration of a harrowing reality many families face.

The fate or horror of getting old is tough to digest but inevitable. Heartfelt but logically unsound. The paranormal elements/rot/black mold gives a comical angle to an otherwise interesting film making the entire story of the movie seem purposeless. If these elements are supposed to be metaphorical, which I think they are, they are not entirely convincing. It is the sole reason that restricts the movie from breaking into the good film barrier.

Starts off as standard horror movie and slowly turns into an elegant exploration of our relation with ageing. Solid performances, great practical effects.

Has no voice of its own, like its cosplaying as a modern horror film and just mimicking all of the stylistic choices that are in at the moment without any intention behind the decisions.

3 kadın birleşip korku filmi yapmışlar. Anneanne, yüksek yüksek tepelere ev kurmasınlar malikanesinde kaybolunca, anne ve torunu aramaya başlar. Anneanne birden bire ortaya çıkıverir. Bir nevi, anne özlemi çeken film, ilerleyen dakikalarda fazla netice vermiyor. Eski anıları unutmak üzerine 1 film. Filmin sonunda, anneanne ve anne beraber. Deşme yaram derin derin. Bu binayı yapan usta inşallah olur hasta.

I wish I could say I enjoyed this more. I can't. Lots of people did enjoy it a lot, though, which is good because it does have an admirable message at its core about the truly devastating effects of dementia & Alzheimer's. Getting old is horrifying. It's a universal fear. For me, though, I just couldn't resonate with any of the story because I was too often confused over what was actually happening & how I was meant to feel about it. In any case, the three leads each deliver strong performances.

Good double bill with The Dark And The Wicked, and one that works far better in that it makes the actual deterioriation of your loved ones the source of horror. Gets a bit lost in endless corridors towards the end, though.

Good performances, relatable, and effective enough with its unnerving style, but things unfold much too slowly, when it's clear what this movie is early in the second act.
