An early sound flick that can be dated [camera work/editing/set design] but also impresses - for the most part, in acting. Charles Laughton, delivers a brilliant and low-voiced performance as Rembrandt on his decline. When he starts in on his poetic monologues, it's really a wonder to behold.

Laughton is simply magnificent.

Laughton hams up every scene - his gravitas is magnetic, but ultimately tiresome. Still, it's striking in every way with some really quite magical moments.

Striking cinematography, sets & costumes of 17th century Holland. I was skeptical if Laughton would be believable as Rembrandt, but he delivers an impressive performance despite the usual Hollywood historical inaccuracies. (e.g. There's no evidence to suggest Menasseh ben Israel and Rembrandt were friends.) Not the happiest movie, nor is Rembrandt the most sympathetic character; but I think the more you appreciate his art the more you will enjoy this.

Pretty darn close to being solo theater. Charles Laughton is fun to watch, but much of this is just him quoting the old testament to an audience of extras. Despite this total focus, Rembrandt's biography is watered down to the point where, sometimes, his identity seems almost circumstantial - mostly dictating the Dutch period wardrobe. Here and there, there is mention of him being a painter, but not much of his art is shown, certainly not discussed. Lukewarm.

Starts off with great potential but gets lost in typical 1930s melodrama about a third of the way through. A great performance from Laughton, however.

Charles Laughton rules the screen again! This time as the famous Dutch painter Rembrandt. And it was so cute watching him be almost heterosexual when in scenes with his real life wife Elsa Lanchester. The film relies heavily on Laughton's acting ability. This becomes a very simple dramatization of Rembrandt's life keeping the dramatic changes in his life as mellow as possible and don't try to sensationalize his being. In one way it's a welcome approach. Positive film, even with his downfalls.
