Chris Marker is truly a treasure of an essayist. Here he lyrically weaves the photography of Denise Bellon with his own entrancing words about the time in which they were shot, from pre-occupation Paris to the midst of World War II. The historical context of the pictures runs deep when at first glance you couldn't even guess it. At 45 minutes it feels too short, but I take what I can get with this guy.

Yet another beautiful filmic essay-cum-poem from Chris Marker, this time in collaboration with fellow director Yannick Bellon, the daughter of the film's primary subject, photographer Denise Bellon. Beautiful and fascinating like Marker's work always is in my experience with it.
