The Côte d'Azur. 1915. In his twilight years, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is tormented by the loss of his wife, the pains of arthritic old age and the terrible news that his son Jean has been wounded in action. But when a young girl miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy. (festival-cannes.fr)

In many ways, this film is a tease. I found it engaging because I wanted to get to know these characters, but the film refuses to let us in, and for that reason it is a huge disappointment. Although the acting, especially by Bouquet, is quite good, the actors are moving around confidently in a story that has nowhere for them to go. Not recommended.

Very slow and pointless story. Tell more about others around him than Renoir himself.

Not bad at all. The symbolism is kind of thrown at you, but I dug it.

only cinematography of this level could match Renoir's world of colors; magnificent...

Gorgeous cinematography which suits the subject matter, it is quite superficial and doesn't explore some of the darker themes although it hints at them - perhaps like Renoirs life and paintings. It did make me want to find out more about all the family.

Not a bad movie, though it was rather aimless and the acting was okay at best. The scenery was absolutely gorgeous though and the cinemtography greatly captured all the lush, warm, and playful light/scenery so vital to Renoir's paintings.

A relatively limp offering despite the presence of a pretty interesting scenario in real life. The film looks great, but it does little with its drama, as if the filmmakers couldn't find a purpose for the material in the shooting or in the editing room. Instead, we get a series of pretty pictures, from colorful close-ups on Renoir paintings to grass-filled hillsides, that add up to very little beyond a mostly undramatic slice of life.

The movie, nicely shot, describes some days of life of Pierre-Auguste Renoir and his family during the first world war.
