"Rent-A-Pal" contains a believable kind of demented psychopathy rooted in real, relatable emotions, like feelings of isolation and stress from being a sole caretaker. You can honestly empathize with David, and you root for him overcoming his issues, which makes the ending all the more grueling and gut wrenching. This is suspense done right.

The film has a good premise and is made with love. But it takes predictable paths and has its impact quite diluted due to its long runtime.

Great performances and an eye for effectively humanizing its characters gives this film an impact and memorability that a more typical approach to this premise would lack. A fantastic dark comedy.

Cute little retro piece that does a really good job reconstructing circa 1990 direct-to-video thriller aesthetic. Slow-burning, very tongue-in-cheek, a little grotesque, but well-devised. If the name Wil Wheaton means anything to you, you are just the right generation to get the most from this.

This is a compelling little character study of a lonely, frustrated man that is perhaps just a little to committed to being a horror film to ultimately succeed. Folkins is convincing as a genuinely nice and caring man committed to caring for his mother who is too socially awkward and fundamentally disconnected from other people to make any real connections.

This was ok, but way, way too long! It would be better if it were 30 minutes shorter.

This movie shows that you don't need a huge budget to effectively create a story that's touching, foreboding and entirely messed up in a lot of ways. It's set in the 90's but having a 'fake friend' is very much a product of the current times where social media influencers pretend to be your friend for the donations and people achieve this feeling of belonging, of belonging in a special circle. The movie itself is just eerie in a lot of ways I can't quite explain. Very Black Mirror -vibes here.

Some of the character development didn't feel believable, which takes away from the film, but it was still pretty interesting.
