I haven't been able to stop thinking about this one since I watched it. In a way, it's the first film to really capture the mood of a Thomas Pynchon novel: a pointed absurdist satire of American weirdos and the capitalist/consumerist dystopia in which they (dis)function, while nonetheless embracing the diversity and strange beauty contained therein. (Not to mention, shadowy government agents and aliens.) Great sense of humor, killer soundtrack, and maybe the best use of "Fuck that" in history.

Repo Man is an overrated 'cult film' by the equally overrated Cox. It has a certain time bound charm, but the subculture its tapping into is largely foreign to this viewer, and despite its offbeat nature, it seems somewhat calculated, although not necessarily in a cynical way. Its largely episodic plot is neither here nor there; the film isn't quite surreal enough to work as a truly outré experience, and there isn't enough narrative glue to hold it together in its less frenetic moments.

I was "with" the film until the second half, when it just gets too confusing with the craziness and non sequiturs. I liked the music. Emilio Estevez was very young. Who doesn't like a killer car? Overall, definitely not boring. Fav scenes: parents donating all their money to a televangelist; shootout.

There's a million things going on here, a bunch of weird plot lines mashed together incongruously, and it amounts to a wonderfully wacky good time. The decent budget, commitment to entertainment, and no fucks given attitude can go a long way together when they hit just the right balance and temperance. Would probably make an awesome double feature with Liquid Sky.

It travels it's own ways by it's own rules. Although that's mostly not that good way to go, it gives the movie a kickass attitude. Also Estevez's career high.

The American Dream turned inside-out, upside-down and back-to-front. Highly satirical, anarchic, and drenched in a weird sense of humour which can be hit-and-miss, tends heavily to the silly side of clever, but which provides plenty of memorable moments. The film-making is kind of rough and ready, an acquired taste, but it's hard to deny Cox's film's relevance to American life with the number of reference points it touches. It's also the film which feels most like a Simpsons episode. Enjoyable.

This is one of my favorite movies because there are so many characters, and all of them are written with plenty of depth. There's not many movies that can carry off a "fuck you" anti-establishment attitude while still being charming and funny. And I think that has more to do with the milquetoast movie industry and its lame attempts at appearing as the cultural zenith, rather than that movies like this can't be done. I'd take one of this over 50 "Crash" 's any day, unless it's the Cronenberg one.

Perhaps the best debut feature from any director. Perfectly captures an attitude with great performances, music, cinematography and humour. So much of the film seems strung together in no real cohesive manner, but that's what makes the film feel so cohesive - it's a Pynchon novel in film form, wild and wacky and funny and dark and cynical and knowingly "above" the characters it seems to endorse but still with a good amount of heart. I just love it endlessly, it's infinitely watchable. Intense.

1984 seemed a bit early for a retro 70s movie, but only the post-punks with their new-found cynical self-awareness could influence one of the most hilarious comedies of the 80s. A neon green radioactive ooze pervades and perverts Repo Man into absurdity beyond definition, because every character is too stupid to bother to define it. This satire is a mockery of mockery, an expose of a culture so desperate to make something exciting they completely miss how insane life is already.

Granted, it kept my attention and at no point did I think it was terrible (like most cult classics), but I don't really get all the fuss. I guess folks living back in 1984 didn't have Adult Swim, so they needed something like this to get their fix.

Part straight slice of life story about being a repo man, part wacky sci-fi comedy. Emilio Estevez is good enough, but Harry Dean Stanton really carries most of the film. And on top of all that, it has one of the best punk rock soundtracks of all time, featuring some of the best from LA such as Black Flag and the Circle Jerks.

It's cult status is understandable as it is definitely out there, but oddness alone is not enough to make it good. I don't know if it achieves all it sets out to (I don't think anyone but Cox knows that) but it definitely gets points for originality.

I suppose it was better in 1984, when Michael Nesmith was relevant, Emilio Estevez had the most exotic-sounding name in Hollywood, and Iggy Pop still only knew three chords... It does, however, star Tracey Walter, who is near the top of my list of favorite bit actors, so it gets a bit of a free pass.

If my friends were interested in films like this I would show them this movie and we would start quoting it a lot. That's the kind of screenplay this is. Of all the Brat Pack people Emilio Estevez is probably the most underrated. Harry Dean Stanton is usually proof that your movie will be awesome. It's one very 80's movie, with punk and a subplot about aliens. Plus it's usually very funny. So basically my point is that this movie appeals to me in every single way. (two times)

"The life of a repo man is always intense." All kinds of weird. It's gleefully nuts reveling in its own insanity. Otto is never really self aware, except when he calls bullshit on Duke blaming society for his shortcomings, but he's got his own scummy charm to him. For better and worse, he's our hero. Even when things get really batty, most of the characters act really nonchalant which only adds to the absurdity of the whole thing. Perfect for a double feature with They Live.

A little too aimless to have such an uncharismatic lead with each interlude falling short of its potential. The satire is laid on nice and thick but there are few laughs outside of the occasional fantastic vulgarity. Iggy Pop's 'Repo Man' is just about the best thing to come out of this. However it does all eventually build into a satisfying ending. Your Mileage May Vary so a Recommended Rental.

Other than its punk protagonist appealing to those who think not buying into mainstream bullshi-t puts them ahead of the game, it's unclear what this alleged cult classic has to offer. As the movie progresses the narrative unravels in increasingly inorganic & WTF ways as if the filmmakers were being rushed out of the editing room; & unfunny characters like the crime-spree punks pop in and out of the film w/ only the most tenuous connection to the story. A punk ethos shouldn't have to mean crap.

Very well done and very fun trashy movie entertainment. The film has an edgy, misanthropic, punk attitude (reflected by the characters, whose hatred I love) and it hardly lets up with the fun and humour (except when it becomes a bit too silly -- "let's do some crimes"). So much of the time it feels like it's going to go down the conventional road, only to swerve into something much more original and daring.

The punk movement can fuck off a bit, but it spurned a bunch of good lines and abnormal reactions to what goes down during this film. Kind of a left field picture where it's easy to confuse HDS with a young Martin Sheen. You could also be forgiven for thinking this had a big influence on the guys who made Hobo with a Shotgun.

Charming and hilarious but kind of a mess. Tries very hard (and succeeds) to appear whimsical even when there's a lot of thought put into it. I have no clue why anybody thought that pretty-boy Emilio Estevez would make a convincing punk. Most of the time he's just moody and annoying. Also not sure why punks supposedly loved this movie, since they don't exactly look good in it. Like Otto himself says, they're just white suburban punks with nothing to really fight against. All their problems are in their own heads. It just kinda drags on, until it picks up near the ending when the hunt for the alien McGuffin finally intensifies.
