This entirely moronic film attempts to terrify you into its banal, truistic anti-drug agenda. Needless to say, there is not a whiff of real life to be found here, and the only thing that terrifies is the positive critical response to this trash.

I was anxious the entire runtime. Aronofsky succeeds once again at taking something not so unusual and making it horrifying. A pretty depressing experience, being someone directly related to a few drug addicts. I can't believe people think this is laughable. I've heard stories. This may be stylistic, but it's close enough to real life if you ask me. Beautifully shot and edited, and Burstyn delivers one of the best performances I've seen maybe ever. Tragic, haunting, raw, and gorgeous.

The real star of this film is the music: the incredible score by Clint Mansell is the reason why this film resonates with so many people. It's ultimately lacking in most other departments save acting - some interesting visuals don't mitigate the in-your-face-editing and a hollow story. We're never given a reason to care, and it doesn't provide us with anything more than a simplistic anti-drug message. Creates an intense experience, but not one worth any more than any other PSA.

Slick and stylish, bleak and harrowing. This could easily just have focused on Sara's story which is easily the most tragic, yet somehow the most relatable. Such is the power of Burstyn's performance, the stories of the other three characters seem slighter, less engaging, by comparison, even though the performances were good and the fates of the characters tragic. It isn't smotheringly grim, but it's close, and must surely serve as a cautionary tale. Very good indeed.

Most anti-drug movies seem to waver uneasily between style and message. Where 'Trainspotting' was too cool and 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' too crazy to ever truly deter, it's safe to say that 'Requiem for a Dream' stays on message. As a rollercoaster to (and through) hell, it's a visually stunning account of substance abuse, equally satirical, beautiful, shocking and heartbreaking. If the "what-have-I-got, Harry?" speech doesn't make you cry, it's because you were conceived in a laboratory.

Asinine and sometimes chuckleworthy story somewhere between Trainspotting (sans humor) and Reefer Madness. All of this glorious ineptitude is spiced liberally with laughable editing, cheap cinematographic eyecandy and worthless performances from all but the enjoyably unhinged excesses of Burstyn. Alternately ridiculous, boring and unintentionally funny, this is the perfect example of new century style-over-substance cinema.

The potential of the first two acts, only slightly marred by the interference of flashy, nonsensical direction, eventually gives way to the most hysterically melodramatic conclusion I have ever witnessed on film, sledgehammered home with blaring soundtrack and editing. If you want a study of heroin addicts that might hold your interest, watch Trainspotting. If you want the longest, most gruelling anti-drugs PSA ever made, by all means watch this film.

Outlandish and nauseating, stylistically cool but substantially lacking (what is the point of Marlon Wayans' character?). Ellen Burstyn's physical performance really carries the film. The overzealous anti-drug message is complimented by the implication that the missing father figure was the catalyst for all this dysfunction - if only there were some clear-headed Ward Cleaver type in the picture this nuclear family would be on the up-and-up!

Has some of the best cinematography I've seen. The story is great (particularly towards the end, it meanders about without direction for too much of the first half), and it has an absolutely incredible musical score. My biggest problem was Jared Leto, whose acting I've always found to be unbearable and pretty hard to believe. Jennifer Connely is also too big a cliche in this. Still though, absolutely excellent. The kind of film everyone needs to see once.

Requiem for a Dream is just such a realistic film. The pain, torment and infliction the cast has to go through feels so frightening and real. The effects of drugs are also distinctively shown and told, from the modern abuse segments to the road of addiction. A very intense, raw, devastating and harrowing experience. You feel depressed all the way through, a feeling very few films can due and evoke these days. From several standpoints this is a classic.

Well made but such an over the top attempt at being emotionally manipulative with the worst possible case scenarios at the end (crazy grandma, one arm, ass2ass) that by the end the exploitation was just more comical to me than it was emotionally affecting. Never felt so bad after a Movie. Some "facts" aren't right, but that's not important because it shows what drugs CAN do to your life and what might be the result after consuming ever and ever again. It also shows alternativ "addicitions" in everyday life, to be addicted to the Media for example. Aronofsky is working with hard cuts and multiple zooms, after that movie I needed some time to come down. Higly recommendable.

What's the point? We watch these peoples' tragedy, but the plot fails to live up to its own promises. Aside from the fact that the story gets absurd (old lady on uppers hallucinating that her fridge wants to eat her? that's just funny and actually drains the power of the other characters' stories), the use of the seasons to divide the film leaves me asking, "Where's spring?" I don't need a happy ending, but I can't shake the feeling that the story is incomplete. It's a noble failure, tho.

This is the single most depressing movie I have ever seen and I have been doing Dostoevsky before. Something that all characters had in common is that none of them had a strong person next to them who they could count on to help them and for me this was the greatest message in the movie. It feels that Requiem has a linear dependence on age. The younger you are, the more impressive it is. I remember watching this at the age of 18 and the effect final scenes with the music had on me. All I see now is lack of any psychological depth to the physical actions. The constant drugs are bad, drugs drugs are bad (insert the beat here) agenda is superficial. Burstyn's acting and character is strongest by far, music is amazing, scenes and colours are beautiful - substance... what substance?

This entire film, every well thought-out aspect of it, bleeds hopelessness of lives lost to addiction and the dead-end dreams that exude from it. Throughout the film, I was pleading for some kind of redemption or for someone to come out as a winner, but Aronofsky knows that wouldn't had been realistic. A film very hard to endure, and may hit close to home for many.

Sour, depressing and humorless, Requiem for a Dream takes such a pessimistic perspective on drug abuse that its impossible too feel emotionally invested in any of the characters, since their dire outcomes are far too easy to predict. This might work as a cautionary tale, but has too little entertainment value to be worth a viewing for the curious. I can appreciate dark films and tragedies, but Requiem goes beyond that seeming almost more like a romance of nihilism and degradation.

A movie about addiction and lonely desperation. On the one hand, it takes unrealistically exploitative manipulation, insulting morality, and pathos louder than the weeping of angels to levels never before seen. Especially that absurdly bombastic soundtrack, which could make taking a shit seem epic and heartbreaking. On the other hand, bearing in mind the utter lack of subtlety, there is actually an aesthetic at work here, visually echoing Lynch and Kubrick with music video style editing.

'Drugs are bad, and excess leads to despair' it tells us, but I kind of disliked the characters so much, I didn't mind seeing them get their arms, amputated or getting gang banged by investment bankers. Aronofsky has an innate, uncanny ability to take subjects we think of as distant and make them happen TO us; his films are totally subjective experiences. This is in many ways his ballsiest film, even if his sometimes self-consciously virtuosic arsenal of tactics has refined itself a little in the last decade. Even more than Black Swan, Requiem makes me feel oddly off-kilter, probably because Aronofsky uses everything in his now-famous bag of tricks to make me feel that way.

Aronofsky knows how to direct. I don't see how you could finish this film without it creating a lasting impression.

Aronofsky's movie illuminates an issue which any person with an I.Q. bigger than her shoe size already knows.

Someone made me watch this movie 3 times one day and I didn't mind, so I guess that is a good sign. This is also the only movie (ever) where a Wayans brother wasn't terrible.

The breakdown of Ellen Burstyn's character in Darren Aronofsky's energetic sophomore effort is emotional and very shocking. It's one of the great performances. By the way, try to remember not to do drugs and/or go to weird sex parties because you'll probably (*huge spoilers afoot*) lose your arm and/or go ass to ass.
