The birth of the Tarantino style: non-linear storytelling, flashy dialogue, filmic and pop culture references, iconic characters. But it's not executed all that well; the acting isn't that good and only a few scenes sparkle. And it's all style, little substance. There's not much humanity to it. Sometimes it just seems like an excuse for these guys to dress up in suits and act like big bad gangsters. I mostly enjoy watching it but then when it's over I feel a slight sense of "well, that's that".

QT's debut runs like a filmed stage-play: the bulk of the action is centered in one setting, and there's plenty of talking-head dialog where characters stand around going over their situation. We come to know this situation in great detail, which is a feat considering we are never really shown it. There are times when the dialog strains a bit to throw in more details ("And then remember when this happened next?"), but on the whole it's quite well done. Roth, Buscemi and Keitel are excellent.

Wow.. how do I justly rate this? I happen to love half of the scenes and hate the rest. Thumbs up for the opening scene, which is one my personal favourites, and all of the scenes with Madsen, Buscemi and Keitel in the warehouse are great fun. But what's up with all the unnecessary, tedious flashback scenes (save the codename scene)? Wouldn't it have been much more awesome in a '12 Angry Men'-styled structure?

Tarantino's characters remain the incarnation of cool, but they also come off as well-rounded and believable, and the dialogue is as brilliantly written as the narrative composition is sneaky. It's a low-budget masterclass and one of the most impressive directorial debuts ever.

Rounding up a great group of actors and giving them lines that will become cult classics over the time, Tarantino shows us that it doesn't take huge explosions and countless firefights to make a movie interesting. This one really got me into movies and made me expand my interest to different genres from the safe conformity of Hollywood blockbusters. RD is one of the coolest flicks out there.

QT is the only person who could make a full length film out of gangsters returning from a failed job and killing each other. The reason he can do this is because he is a master of irrelevant but funny dialogue, creating extended scenes (the film could have been 5 mins shorter if they used a cigarette lighter that worked!) and the ability to use consummate actors who can carry it all off; Buscemi is simply superb. I was shocked by the fact this ended as a blood bath; who would have thought?

I often have a hard time enjoying films where the main characters are criminals and this is yet another entry in the long list of films that meet that criteria and are subsequently praised by the critics and the masses. For me these kind of films almost never work, I can't relate with the main characters at all, which I think is very important in film. The violence is sickening. The dialogue while naturalistic and very QT-style, isn't my cup of tea either. Not my kind of film.

Reservoir Dogs is just an all-around great film. It keeps you guessing, it surprises you a few times, and it serves as a great character study. I'd go as far to say all of the main parts are acted very well. Almost everybody gets the chance to stand out. Really well written and made. If you somehow missed this, you need to watch it.

I've been told that you either love Reservoir Dogs and hate Pulp Fiction, or vice versa, and it holds true for me. I've come to expect two things from Tarantino's movies: over-the-top violence, and absurd hilarity. Reservoir Dogs only really delivered the former, and the end result was a less enjoyable movie.

My interest in this movie is due in large part to the influence it's had on my love of movies. It was the first Tarantino movie I saw and really made me rethink my perception and expectations of movie narratives. The deliberate staginess, unconventional dialog, and flashback-driven story fascinated me immensely - and they still do. Tarantino has had one of the most influential careers of modern cinema, and Reservoir Dogs was quite an impressive starting point.

When I was 15, I'd seen 3 rated R movies. I had a shitty 12 inch TV in my room. My family had just moved and one of my best friends started letting me borrow some of the coolest movies I'd never seen. This movie was at the top of that pile. 17 years later, I'm kinda wishing Tarantino had a better actor in his place for the opening scene. I'm also not in love with every scene now, just most of them. When a movie is less cool than it was in high school, but is still great, thats saying something.

Showing only the before and after of the heist job is a unique conceit that could easily flop without a strong script; fortunately, Tarantino fully delivers with car trunk loads of sizzling mono/dialogues (the strong cast never wavers in numerous lengthy scenes) and a compelling back-and-forth-in-time narrative that perfectly develops the characters (see the Mr. Orange twist; wanted an official Mr. Pink intro though). Deliberate, artistic camerawork (see the final close-up) brings it all home.

The opening breakfast scene is pretty good, but the conversation isn't as great as in later Tarantino movies. The pacing of the film is a bit off, particularly because of the flashbacks which are of widely varying lengths and while they're good in their own right they don't always add to the film. Despite the flaws it still manages to make it all work. The style keeps things tense despite the detours and the climax is just wonderfully executed.

Reservoir Dogs is a film that explains a lot about an event that we never get to see, but the event isn't ultimately what's important. The characters are what matters, but we don't get the same level of explanation for all of them. I wanted more of this, and less about the heist. The latter didn't matter nearly as much as the dynamics and relationships between the characters. It's still an incredibly compelling, entertaining and interesting film, and something that I would definitely watching.

Only moderately entertaining. On the one hand, the dialogues are typically witty and Buscemi and Keitel provide great performances. On the other, it's a rather half-baked and unrewarding film, as the simplistic story cannot become pleasingly complex not even with flash-backs and move-forwards, and there's a lack of that coolness that would make later installments "Pulp Fiction" and "Jackie Brown" so special.

Awesomely acted, with a great twist and one almost horrifying sequence. I don't feel like any of the characters got enough screen time, or knew most of their motivations besides "diamonds = good". Reservoir Dogs is packed with memorable quotes, excellently designed scenes and clever direction. The cast work wonderfully together and as the tension increases as the story unfolds you can't help but be wound up into the violence, chaos and confusion that has enveloped a once slick operation. The setting of the warehouse is also a great setting allowing the film to present the feeling so prominent thoughout, that this ragtag bunch of vicious, scheming animals could self-destruct at any moment.

As a law-and-order guy, I was pretty disgusted when I first saw this a few years after it came out. Now, with over 2000 movies watched, I still can't say I love it, but I can appreciate the things it does well: the dialogue, the scant set that feels a lot bigger, the casting, and the way the storyline lurches a while keeping you off-guard. It's got quite a bit of swagger for being a debut film, but it mostly walks the walk.

Although I'm not sure the movie has aged the best, you do see the flashes of Tarantino's signature style in the film's non-linear plot and lengthy dialogue scenes. The famous Mexican standoff scene is still great and there are some nice character moments by a great cast, many of whom were fairly early into their careers. Tarantino will go on to make many better movies, but as a piece of film history, it's a very solid debut.
