If I lucked into marrying Milla Jovovich none of your videogames franchises would be safe. And they said sideboob in Adventures of Lolo couldn’t be done. There’s a stupid underground secret train, that’s the most resident evil thing of them all.

Originally I saw this movie in the theater, and during that part where Milla Jovovich kicks that zombie dog in the face, I LOST MY GODDAMN MIND. It was the funniest thing I had seen up until that point in my life. If this movie were solely THAT scene, it would receive a solid 100 from me. As it stands, this muddled and boring video game adaptation gets a 15. Ick.

Resident Evil Marathon, Hour 2: What is the audience for these films? How do they make money? I have so many useless questions needing answers. Two hours in, some themes come into focus: angry white boy rock music, script amnesia, and getting Milla into incomprehensible and/or half-naked outfits. The memory loss angle is a decent device to hold interest and keep us on the same page as our heroes. I saw better CGI on the Playstation.

When videogame spin-offs do not take themselves too seriously and keep that videogame clip feeling, they catch me. Also there is a CGI like lankiness to Mila Jovovich, so she is the perfect actress for this role (just like Jolie/Croft pairing). The rest of the series is badly rated, but this one was fun to watch gory enough but not distasteful, kinda has a story but do not forget that it is a zombie/horror thingie; it was done just right.

I needed a franchise to chew on during my self-quarantine, and I ended up settling on the movie adaptations of one of my favorite game franchises. And it's... okay. I was warned about how bad this was be, but I think it's a little misunderstood. This was a different time of hyper-serious bullshittery, and while the movie DOES NOT hold up to today's standards, it's a good time and quite fun in retrospect. That being said, cheers to going down from here.

Resident Evil is an acceptable video game adaptation. When it comes to movies we don't have much that keeps us coming back for more. Resident Evil is a series that isn't offensive but it isn't high art either. This first movie is a lot of fun. It follows the movie in places but isn't afraid to tell it's own story as well. Milla Jovovich does a good job of playing an amnesiac lead who is really a tank in heels. The rest of the cast is serviceable as well. I still enjoy this movie.

I was living in the middle of the city, across the road from Hoyts, and for those months I saw every film they were showing. Which is how I saw this on the big screen, never having heard of 'Resident Evil' in any form. I quite liked those shots of the mansion at the start.

Under Quarantine Film Reviews #33: So I just got Resident Evil 4 and I thought why don't I watch all 6 films. Although it barely references the games, it did capture the tight and claustrophobic settings of the original games. Although it was a generic 2000s action movie romp, I am interested in where the legend Paul W.S. Anderson takes the franchise.

Well, it could be worse. It's mostly a bloodless, bland affair that plods along at a decent pace. The soundtrack is grating and what little acting there is is pretty weak, but it has a zombie dog being kicked in the face, the always cool Colin Salmon being chopped up by lasers and Jovovich in various states of undress and/or wetness. Does Citizen Kane have zombie dogs or elevator beheadings? Hah! I don't think so!

A loud, obnoxious film with no feeling or joy in it whatsoever. I first saw this when I graduated high school, and the added maturity on my end hasn't helped Resident Evil's case (though I didn't like it back then either). The characters are so thin that we ultimately care little about what happens to them, and computer programs and shadowy, evil corporations rarely make the best antagonists. The soundtrack here deserves special attention as few scores have grated so strongly on the ear.

As bad as the games are good, even if it manages to retain most of the action. Makes this pretty darn terrible then and another member of the bad game-to-movie conversion club. Then again, seeing as this shares nothing with the games other than a few names it makes the connection to the series tenuous at best.

Milla Jovovich is certainly a lovely one. The general video game-ish feel of fighting through hordes of zombies as they make way through the underground lab is amusing at points, but overall the movie is a bit loud and abrasive and certainly narratively thin. The constant almost club-like music is a strange choice, inappropriate in basically every scene it’s in.

Mind-numbing, rushed, unsatisfying, and underdeveloped to hell and back, "Resident Evil" is far from one of the worse films based upon an iconic videogame, but as an adaptation of one of the most atmospheric, haunting, and truly terrifying gaming franchises of the console generation, it fails on every level, replacing creeping dread and a labyrinthine mansion with a generic laboratory, inhabited by an equally sterile and dull undead horde. When it comes to horror, less can truly be so much more.

Resident Evil is a stereotypical B-movie about zombies and evil scientific experimentation gone wrong, but it does the genre well. Zombie movies don't need great acting or dialogue to be successful at making you grimace, and this movie is no exception. I found myself more entertained than with any other video game adaptation I've seen, and the ending teased the fact that this movie is really only just the beginning of a cheesy, gore-infused epic.

For a bad movie (or a Paul W.S. Anderson one), this isn't all that bad. Sure, it's a cheese drizzled zombie movie with some bad F/X shots, but the story keeps moving. And since Anderson's films are usually two steps shy of atrocious, this one exceeded my expectations of dreck and doom, and "Doom" this ain't. Ashamed and guilty I stand---but 'Resident Evil', based on a popular video game series I know nothing about---was kind of fun.

This portrayal of re-animation of the dead is nothing new, but there is something highly appealing about an early 2000s thrasher metal soundtrack synced to Milla Jovovich (particularly when drenched in water) kicking zombie ass. It also has a distinctive video game feel (as you'd hope), which has much to do with the closed world set up by Anderson who shows much restraint in sticking to this (it's not just spatially claustrophobic, but also in a narrative sense).

Not as polished and exuberant as the other three PWSA's RE films, but still a well-designed take on the original "Alien" with a beautiful sense of placement, with characters wandering through bright/somber corridors as zombies or A.I. tricks pursue them. Milla provides enough screen presence to sustain incredible scenes -- the awakening in the bathtub, kicking zombie dogs, awaking again in a steel bed --, as PWSA does the trick of mantaining this in a pure videogame level of fun and tension.
