This is one of those movies where the first half hour or so is boring because you know the premise and are forced to wait around while it's set up. All in all, it's really nothing you haven't seen before, and the production is TV-movie level at best. Just not my bag, I guess. Maurice Jarre's score is great, so I'll give a few points for that. I did like the epilogue a lot.

Alternately fascinating and frustrating film is admirable in presenting its outlandish premise as literally, demonstrably true, and creating a vivid and grounded backdrop to play out against. Philosophically the movie falters badly, introducing an intriguing thread of religious fanaticism on which it is unable or unwilling to follow through, leading to a choppy and scattered second act. Burstyn and Shepard are both terrific, and Jarre's typically lush and haunting score is a definite asset.

Pretty well done. In a mileu that much room to go "over the top", remains pretty grounded. Disagree with a lot of glumpy_99's review aside from the it's not bad part and Burstyn acts well. Curing by "laying on hands" is one of those memes that MAY have some factual basis and the religious interferance/inference is followed through by the switch to the son as a rabid beleiver. Sex scenes without vital bits being shown. Has some hokey parts but they're forgivable when set against overall quality.

First, this is a feast of Americana, located largely in Kansas, and at times reminiscent of John Ford, with Burstyn talking to a tombstone, Eva Le Gallienne supplying the ham, and Farnsworth, as a grizzled Last Chance Gas proprietor, softly singing "Come-a-ti-yi-yippie-yippie-yay" and showing off his two-headed snake for a dime. Beyond that, it's a remarkably serious and unhokey treatment of occult power.
