A clever opening, along with the master of narration [Welles] for accompaniment, gives way to a stilted and uneven experience. Particularly awful in the use of music. At least it's a short one.

There's almost no reason to watch this. None of it's really bad, but almost nothing is interesting, either. From the moment you the women take him back to the house... you know the ending already, right? Five year olds do, too. It's kind of cool, I guess, that Welles played himself. The shot of the guy going back in the house the next day was haunting and pretty. It's nice to what old stuff was like without the polish. But, pretty standard fare. You won't be wowed.

Half a film, half some dead end punchline featuring Welles which, more than it confers prestige, seems to confirm that otherwise it is completely vapid. I quite easily fall for Welles though.

Needless VO. The whole setup is probably supposed to make it all come off rather tongue in cheek and droll, but instead it just plays to me like Orson the Great giving way to another one of his indulgences. The best part is the moody photography; the worst is the overwrought musical flourishes (fading out on what sounds for all the world like the theme from Dennis the Menace).
