The effects are pretty good, but by the time a child is old enough not to be scared senseless, they'll be too old to care.

Starts off pretty well, with an eery setup and a neat introduction to our dystOzpian setting, but then things shift from creepy and interesting to just being another generic fantasy adventure. Aside from TikTok (of which the FX are fantastic), all the side characters are dire and the pacing isn't great either. Love it or hate it though, it's got merit. A slice of greatness, followed by scraps, littered amongst a plain of "what the heck is this crap?" [insert image of Scarecrow]

A surprisingly creepy fantasy which is the sort of thing that easily lends itself to a million readings. The real life/Oz connection is fascinating and I dunno I think Dorothy's actions are kind of cool

Watching again years later, the movie is a bit more tame than I remember, but probably not good for kids.

Some of the best special effects in any film. But a lack of good character writing. Nicol Williamson gave a real standout performance, which unfortunately was so good it made everyone else seem bad.

The Nome King looks like a moveable Mt. St. Helens and he alone is magical. In fact, he blows Dorothy and her tacky-looking friends off the screen. So we end up liking the Nome King and hating Dorothy and her crowd, which I doubt was the intention of the L. Frank Baum series.

Immersive film despite being 80s-bad in all the worst ways. The lead actress was outstanding, and the creative elements of the world (aside from the cringeworthy wheel guys) were appealing. Especially impressive was the rock-face minion animations - rivalling any modern special effect in execution or imagination. Convincing motivations unraveled in the last half, very unclear what or why the antagonists were doing what they were doing, and Dorothy's home life ends in an unexplained 180.

Possibly the scariest kids movie ever made.

This is an incredible film. A lot darker than the first Oz film though. There's a lot of interesting characters, and a lot of really nice set designs, and it's really disappointing that not many people have seen this film.
