Despite hosting a trio of great performances from Rockwell, Bates, and Hauser, Richard Jewell fails to deliver its message about being railroaded by the media thanks in large part to its own railroading of reporter Kathy Scruggs and the rest of the news media. The fact that Jewell was being investigated, whether Eastwood likes it or not, was in fact newsworthy and deserved reporting. The film cannot practice what it preaches in the slightest, and that damages its credibility greatly in my eyes.

Hamm and Wilde are both pitched way too high, but Paul Walter Hauser is perfectly sensitive and understated as Jewell. (Kathy Bates and Sam Rockwell are equally excellent.) Eastwood has an impressively deft touch, and instead of leaning into the film as tragedy, he's willing to have some fun on Jewell's account; much of the film plays like a legal parody about a lawyer whose client is a massive bootlicker.

Hmm, this all takes place in July ... the Macarena was unleashed on us in August. Total nonsense from Eastwood. 30% of the script was people saying Richard Jewell.

This is one of my favorites of Eastwood. The movie sorely lacks that tidbit of insight as to why the FBI took such an interest in Jewell, but it is refreshing to see a movie about injustice done to a protagonist, who is a fool, a fatty and a goddamn hero.

Eastwood at this fuck it point of his life is working relentlessly, racing to preserve and perhaps restore American pride through a cinematic record. With a deep skepticism for authority and yet admiration for a sense of duty, he works in a space more timeless than the politics of the day (I remember a time when liberals were distrustful of intelligence institutions. we love em now wtf?) Sometimes regressive yet always empathetic.

The broad outlines of this tale may be true (and maddening), but Eastwood falls victim to a screenplay which personifies its contempt for the FBI and media in Hamm and Wilde - both actors struggle with cartoonishly exaggerated caricatures, counterbalanced by a haloed Hauser and Bates (though there is at least an attempt to make Jewell himself somewhat well-rounded). Film is ultimately stolen by Rockwell, who brings a subtlety and shading to his shyster lawyer which is missing from the text.

This is a good movie in a lot of ways: the pacing, screenplay, and many of the performances. But in a way that sticks out like a sore thumb, it is very clearly an Eastwood film: the antithesis to whatever person/thing Eastwood is defending (in this case, Jewell, his antithesis being the media and the government) is presented as a pack of incredulous, almost bumbling fools. Yes, Jewell is the good guy, but his bad guy lacks menace and credibility due to its own Eastwoodian incompetence.

Mixed feelings about this As a man Jewell was a little too "goody two shoes" for my taste and I could see why he was a suspect but did he deserve the treatment he got ? They seriously need to reevaluate the justice system As for the movie itself watchable pretty straightforward

Paul Walter Hauser nails it in showing us how cumbersome weakgiftedness can be but, on the other side, strong and protecting at the same time.

Hauser plays Jewell perfectly and the film conveys a sense of dread that comes with false accusations pretty well, but the portrayal of the press is pretty ham-fisted and the actual investigation elements of the story was barebones. On the other hand, the film makes a valid point that these charges lacked a foundation to begin with and it ends on good catharsis for Richard after this event change his view on how security is conducted. Boring cinematography aside, this is a decent film.

It's uneven, and the plot could be trimmed, but the great performances and deft direction are hard to argue with. I don't let politics affect my opinion of movies, and I'm not doing it this time either, but I feel its message on the court of public opinion is timely.

Richard Jewell is the antithesis of Dark Waters. Credit to the filmmakers for picking a subject that isn't (now) widely popular and coaxing me to do a quick deep-dive into the actual events. Rockwell & Hauser deliver compelling performances while Hamm & Wilde are entertaining. The controversy surrounding Wilde's Scruggs is overblown, her character simply being the means for an indictment of the press. Eastwood's direction paces the film too slowly, losing that the events transpired over 8 days.

Paul Walter Hauser plays the same moronic character from I, Tonya really well. Sam Rockwell reminded me of Jeremy Piven's Ari Gold. The media's portrayed poorly here but it feels so comical to have Olivia Wilde play such a bad villain. I come away feeling her character's the issue, not the media. If anything, it seem like Jewell as the victim is as much to blame because of his simpleness. Fav scene: Jewell snapping back at Rockwell about how he was the only one who treated him well.

Watch as a sleazy journalist prostitutes herself to a perverted adulterous government slimeball in order to assassinate the character of our gun-toting NRA card-carrying hero...and it's all Bill Clinton's fault! In Clint Eastwood's latest right-wing grievance porn. In real life, the entire total time from where his name hit the papers as a suspect to him getting cleared by the FBI was only EIGHT DAYS! The movie makes it feel like years.

If you like your films about real-life injustices that get your blood boiling, this may kill you. It's a purposefully frustrating watch, as it digs into this media shitstorm, and even though there's nothing overly cinematic or special in how it does it, it at least avoids any sentimental time-wasting pitfalls (I'm looking at you Just Mercy).

Observe and Report did it better. Still an interesting piece on trying to find some importance in your drab, boring and impotent life. Gets a bit too sanctimonious about the evils of media or whatever (they’re ghouls but I don’t need the confrontation moment near the end where I’m supposed to jump out of my chair and cheer him in)

The acting here is awesome from Rockwell, Bates, Wilde, Hamm and Hauser, but the way the script is written pushes a whole lot of blame on one reporter while the rest of the media just seems to follow this one villain. It's weird, but otherwise it's very watchable and kind of heart-breaking.

This was an incredibly under-rated movie. I went in because I have generally liked Clint Eastwood's work (Gran Torino being a recent favourite of mine). I absolutely loved it. It is not a popcorn movie but good cinema at its best. Being based on a true story was an added plus. I was hoping Paul Walter Hauser at least gets an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for playing a simple guy who is wronged by the system.

the story of men with IQs of 82 who make videos in the Taco Bell drive through about cancel culture. Richard Jewell would have been one of those men; a convenient punchline and scapegoat for unrest stemming from decades of neoliberal erosion of social welfare — and the two forces making that happen, the US Government and the Media, are all too eager to make a show of the individual's guilt. did Eastwood intend any of this? oh, definitely not. but it works that way, and it's very entertaining.

Like Sully, it's a story about how doing one's duty and acting out of concern for human safety is somehow perverted beyond recognition by corrupt institutional powers hellbent on destroying the reputation of its 'hero'. What should be a scathing attack on warped social values plays out in a surprisingly benign register, despite the better efforts of Hauser who is good as Jewell. Ray's screenplay also fails to really get to the heart of the problem, and the antagonists are too one dimensional.

It has some really amazing performances (particularly Bate's, who's simply fantastic, like always), but it has some ideas i disagree with tbh, it feels like an alt-right production (which, i mean, it is) trying to portray themselves as the goodies for once... but they never are lol. I hadn't even heard about Richard Jewell before the film, so i can't really make an opinion about him or anything, but with all the guns, hunting, "i'm not gay" bullshit that's shown here, well, i don't like him tbh.

Paul Walter Hauser adds lots of depth to a well-directed film about an interesting and important, but fairly forgotten event. However, it never rises above run-of-the-mill since it can't decide on its patriotism and is happy to indulge in lazy misogyny.

Paul Walter Hauser harika. Filmin sonu da güzel bitiyor. Bombelere gel bombelere.

Very well performed by Hauser, Rockwell, and Bates. I appreciated the portrayal of institutions (law enforcement and media) missing the truth because they don't know the person. The cop and journalist were way overplayed, making it harder to relate to the blindness and faults of these people, blindnesses and faults we all often suffer from. In this, the film makes it too easy on the rest of us, and plays into the narrative that only law enforcement or media are the problem. We're all the problem

The fact that Jewell successfully sued the media as a result of his 88 days of sheer hell would suggest that the main story was fairly accurately portrayed, even if the secondary bad guys were dreadful caricatures. The failing of this movie is that it purports to tell a story of a man wrongfully labelled, when it does exactly the same to a journalist, who isn't around to defend herself. This movie grew on me, as the first half an hour was terrible, but after the accusation, things improved.

I like it the more I think about it. But I'm just thinking about that teary two-handed pastry grip of death, one of the most beautiful moments in all of Eastwood's films, subtly built to, and a fine conclusion to this JUDGE PRIEST-esque tale of folksy, gently prodding humour in the darkness of American institutions, illuminated by Americans. THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT and the donut tastes sweet. (The real Jewell avidly sought publicity. The real reporters made the phone walk. There is only darkness.)

I never knew much about Richard Jewell. I know that he was falsely accused but that's about it. Clint Eastwood made me really care about Jewell and feel sorry for the way things ended up for him. The acting in this movie is top notch. I like Sam Rockwell but he has always played characters that I've despised. It's good to see him play more of a likeable character. I'm glad that this story was told because I probably still had some prejudice towards Jewell because of how he was portrayed.

I get people are scared to say American Sniper is good b/c it’s such unabashed propaganda but it’s a better version of this broken hero trained from birth to worship American empire who gets chewed and spit out by that same empire but in this one there’s redemption for Kyle there’s death. Kyle as old conservative Jewell as the modern. Prob the obvious trump parallels make this one for ppl trying to own libs

A well made film from the foremost reactionary artist in the US. One of the strongest narratives or throughlines of US civil society - the boot licking of authority figures (police, FBI, presidency) even when they are trying to put you in the electric chair for treason. They can do this to a nobody like Richard Jewell, because he doesn't matter and his name was on a FBI corkboard. FBI can ruin a man's life because they had to find someone to blame for their ineptitude.

Without a doubt Eastwood's funniest movie, Hauser is compelling and downright great. Rockwell does his usual riveting thing, my heart breaks for Bates, and Hamm nails his slime ball role. Wilde's narcissistic journalist gets to represent the entirety of media, which is unfair, and the portrayal of the FBI feels problematic. Throw all of that into a big stew and you end up with a feast of a movie. Eastwood delivers a winner.
