Saying you hate Riddick is like saying you hate Cool Whip-brand sweetened non-dairy whipped product. Sure, it is one of the nastiest things ever to be conceived in a hidden 1950s underground nuclear research facility, but in grandma's Thanksgiving desserts, it's but a single degree of separation from ambrosia. And yes, I seem to have lost track of where I was going with this analogy.

It's rare that the third entry in a series is the best one (as one could make the unwanted sequel argument with ease), but here we are. We've had Riddick as Space Plissken and Riddick as Space Conan, so why not Riddick as Space Survivorman? The isolated first act works best of the bunch, as the movie slowly turns into a Pitch Black remake of sorts, correcting most of that film's flaws. Diesel is tons of fun, and Sackhoff, Bautista & Nable ain't bad either. A quality B-movie with cool creatures.

A step back in the direction of Pitch Black, this time Riddick is stuck on a planet with terrible creatures on their way. Wait, maybe this is a remake of Pitch Black. No, no. I remember now, in Pitch Black the monsters are like Swoop Raaaaa! In this one they're like Stomp Aaaarrr!

If you thought Riddick was this amazing badass you'd be mistaken. It appears the reason why no one can kill Riddick is because the universe is inhabitated by space clowns. It's like watching the three stooges, Benny Hill, and Mr. Bean in space dressed as bounty hunters running around with their rubber mallets and squirting flowers. The biggest threat here are the australian outback on steroids space animals. The first 25 minutes was a nice buildup until the bounty hunter slapstick began.

Spends the first half hour undoing everything from the second film (which I surprisingly still remember) before turning the next 90 minutes into a carbon copy of Pitch Black. If not for the shiny gloss finish that modern CGI provides, this could easily be a mid-90s direct-to-DVD release starring Christopher Lambert or Mario van Peebles. Vaguely enjoyable due to Diesel's general badassery, but definitely not the sequel I expected from Chronicles.

In this case, the third entry of the trilogy turns out to be the best one... though with this franchise, granted, that isn't saying that much. It's certainly not a great movie and the dialogue is largely mediocre, but it is very interesting how Twohy takes advantage of his limited budget by making this a "bottle episode" of a movie, mostly set in and immediately around a single small building/bunker, a nearby cave and the desert in between them. Mostly gets its gritty B-movie action job done.

I read somewhere that Vin Diesel is the actor with the most likes on Facebook. Which is baffling to me. This movie had its moments but it doesn't live up to its two predecessors. Everything involving Katee Sackhoff's character was horrible.

A step down in quality from the previous Riddick movies. Horribly dated visuals, cringeworthy dialogue and the dumbest bad guys I've seen in a movie this year. Only reason I give it an average grade rather than a bad one is that the main character is still incredibly likeable and the usual survival story kept my interest.

I wanted to enjoy 'Riddick,' but the film is the most aimless of the three. It wants to be 'Cast Away,' 'Aliens,' and a 'Pitch Black' remake all at once. None work effectively. Vin Diesel's character still interests, but this movie, while a technical accomplishment on such as low budget, fails to deliver anything memorable or worthwhile.

Riddick is worth seeing if you like seeing Vin Diesel do cool things, or if you wanted a slightly -- but only slightly -- different take on what Pitch Black did thirteen years prior. Vin Diesel is fun to watch, and watching him kill the bad guys is enjoyable. The special effects are good, the action is sometimes hilariously over-the-top and incredibly gory, and if the editing had chopped off about half an hour of unnecessary filler then it would definitely be worth seeing.

This franchise is a little tired. It seems like the lack of success of "Chronicles" forced Diesel and Twohy into making a smaller movie, but this one feels like a retread of Pitch Black. Vin Diesel is a great and believable action star, of course, but no one else in the film really stands out (not even Katee Sackhoff or Batista).

Pitch Black (The Original Riddick) was a great little sci-fi thriller. Chronicles of Riddick (The Second Riddick) had a weak sci-fi story but great action so about half the audience forgave it. Riddick III is the worst of all of them! The actors Vin Diesel and Katee Sackhoff received embarrassing roles. This whole production was a kick in the nuts for all involved and all the fans of Riddick.

I'm not really getting why we had to wait nine years since "The Chronicles of Riddick" to get an eponymous rehash of the first movie. You'd think with a few years of mulling around some ideas, Twohy could come up with something awesome, but nope, Riddick gets thrown on another random planet with deadly fauna. In spite of it being a clear rip off of itself, Vin Diesel still kicks some ass and sci-fi is still my bag.

They had the possibility to make a pretty good riddick-is-King-of-Necromogers story. Inexplicably, they prefered to wipe out what was left at the end of last movie and replaced it by a Rambo-like (the first movie) shit. And what are Kathee Sackoff's bare boobs bringing to the plot??? Is it Battlestar Galactica fan service?

Reasonably entertaining xerox of Pitch Black that sometimes feels too much like a video game. The first act starts off like a less pretentious version of the beginning of There Will Be Blood before evolving into a self-contained tale of independence and survival. The problem with the film is that the remaining two thirds feel perfunctory in comparison. Riddick is, in many ways, the person we should all be - someone who makes plans, acts with purpose and gets shit done.

Riddick, as a person, isn't all bad. Mostly bad, maybe. But not all bad. If pressed, I guess we could say the same thing about Riddick, the movie. It's not all bad. Just mostly. Riddick honors its most honorable characters: Those who do the right thing tend to survive. Those that don't are doomed to die. The "good" are rewarded and the "bad" are punished--Hollywood style. Although I truly enjoyed it, and love the whole Riddick franchise, it just wasn't that good of a movie. It is fun, with some really cool settings and a bad ass sci-fi story, but there is something lacking about it. Maybe its that I wanted more of the character, who knows. Also, the CGI could have been better, especially in the "Dingo-Dango's".

Its good elements--a creative setting and classic set-up--are not supported by its (very weak) writing, (poor) supporting cast, or (fumbled) execution (no pun intended, as one execution in particular was hilariously on point). All the same I wish to recommend non-blockbuster fantasy films such as this, as they simply possess something that the Avengers never will. Perhaps it is authenticity.

This overlooked third part in Twohy/Diesel's franchise is better than most blockbusters of this season. It starts out as a survival film -- there is a great 25-minute or so prologue --, it develops into a tale about a man in a lonely and hostile planet trying to find his savage soul after being double-crossed by civilization, and then it becomes an interesting Hawksian siege/escape film, a post-Escape from LA Carpenter homage, with two gross and funny groups uniting to claim Riddick's head.

I really enjoyed almost everything about this film. The exception is that I've already seen this movie. It was called Pitch Black. The story picks up right after Chronicles, and is an interesting progression, but, at the same time, Twohy could have told ANY other story here, and I'd probably have liked it more. It's kind of like how Ridley Scott's Robin Hood was good, but wasn't the film we WANTED to see; we want to see the NEXT story, the one where he's actually Robin Hood; similar thing here.

I hated this movie so much. It's like a remake of Pitch Black, but instead of being at least playfully subconscious of the fact that Riddick is a character who does not belong in the movies he's in, it goes full dumb and wastes so much time building up to a relentlessly dull and unsuspenseful story. What's the point of dropping so much fodder for Riddick to pick off if you're rooting for him to do it? Did you write a film or a video game? Don't make a fourth film.

I hoped that by going back to lower budget they would come up with something closer to Pitch Black than Chronicles -- but unfortunately that's not the case. This would be passable as direct-to-dvd/TV scifi but the cliche filled dialogue, bad acting and not that great FX are not what I expect in a cinema. Diesel must really love this character and I respect him for risking his own money in order to get this done, but I just wished the film was a lot better.

Mediocre. I haven't seen Pitch Black or Chronicles in a long time, but going from memory this is probably my least favorite of the franchise. The first half hour is enjoyable, it's interesting that they took such a gruff, action anti-hero and made him alone and vulnerable, but then they just ran out of ideas and start recycling Pitch Black. The script could have been hilariously bad/entertaining if it wasn't for the downright sexism/homophobia. It takes a lot to offend me, but fuck that shit.

There is no dimension to his character at all, he is just a shell, a composite of things Vin personally finds cool. Director\Writer David Twohy's second attempt at recreating the thrilling experience of his 1999 cult classic Pitch Black, is alternately better and worse than 2004s big-budget flop (and guilty pleasure) The Chronicles of Riddick.
