I do appreciate this low-key, gritty breed of Western, but compared to the existential nightmare that is The Shooting, Ride in the Whirlwind is a straightforward morality piece about vigilante justice. Recalls The Ox-Bow Incident, but without that film's finesse or vigor.

Not quite as formally intriguing as The Shooting, but still a satisfyingly mean and lean western that combines a little bit of Beckett with a little bit of Roger Corman. I liked the ending - a classic ride-into-the-sunset without any of the hope and glory that normally accompanies such a moment.

Sweaty, gritty, excellent dark western. The cast is a marvel, especially Cameron Mitchell.

Story seemed a bit slight. (Movie offered more proof that you should not show sky during day-for-nights.)

Dark and depressing. Probably allegorical in some way. The situation resembles their lives as a whole, and the West itself. Or something. It is not without deepness in meaning, but it's almost devoid of plot and character. Meh to the max.

Unique story. It makes the best of minimal locations and budget. Very good for what it is

Superb story but the ending is not satisfying and the characters are too shallow.

Unless you're a Nicholson completionist, skip and watch The Shooting instead.
