Nothing can prepare you for your first viewing of this movie. It's so completely bonkers and over-the-top with its violence and gore that you spend most of the time wondering "Did I really just see that?" (Also: "How did they ever manage to arrest this guy in the first place?") A better Mortal Kombat movie than the actual Mortal Kombat movies.

Super low budget kung fu/gore/comedy. This is what Dead Alive would've been like if Peter Jackson were Chinese. Exceptionally bloody finale.

When an 8-year old is put in charge of writing a martial arts prison movie, you get Riki-Oh. It's super Rikidiculous but the extreme (and admittedly, hilarious) violence compensates for all the lame/silly parts. When one of the villains gets shot in the buttcheeks after which his head explodes, you know you're watching something truly special.

The first time I caught this on TCM and for whatever reason they were playing the original audio but had no subtitles. Didn't stop me from watching the entire thing and honestly, I don't think the inability to understand a single word detracted from it in anyway. It's that kind of movie and I mean that as the highest compliment possible.

This movie is just incredibly bad. The whole thing is a completely ridiculous awful piece of crap. BUT: if you are searching for the perfect trashfilm with huge amounts of gore, you can easily add 70 points to my score and will be highly entertained :D

Absolutely insane. It really should be terrible, and it is punctuated by a few scenes of naffness, but this was genuinely ludicrously entertaining. Full of violent, gory fun. Bring an open mind to this one.

This is quite possibly one of the most important civil rights parables of our time. It doesn't matter if it's Black panthers or Black lives matters. What matters are the lessons of Riki-Oh. A class struggle between the corrupt bourgeois and the proletariate class caught between factions. The political intrigue and social mechanics contain insightful messages for our current era. An underrated gem of social insight. A true spectacle of genius film making.

79 points...every single point from high camp. Remember the exploding head clip from the Daily Show like 8 years ago? This was the movie. If you're not into kung fu flicks...do NOT watch it. If you are, get a group together and enjoy. Better with a crowd.

An amazingly entertaining film with a ridiculous amount of viscera...Basically the type of film I'd want to make, which is a three stooges episode taken to feature length with extreme gore.

the first villain in RIKI-OH is so badass he introduces himself by crushing a child's toy, gouging an old man's face and strutting out of the prison bathroom--"who cares?!" he shrugs with no little swagger when told he hasn't brushed his teeth. unfortunately, his grand exit is marred when he's tripped by the titular hero and faceplants onto a spike - and that's one of the tamest, least riotous sequences of the 90 minute runtime. this film makes me happy.

Possibly the most ridiculous movie I've seen. Somehow despite the mind-bogglingly inept narrative it still manages to be perfectly coherent in its enthusiastically berserk delivery of martial arts & dystopian prison cliches. Every single aspect of its filmmaking is commited to & on par with its ferocious juvenile vision (adorably this includes the English dub). Pretty much guaranteed to provoke uncontrollable laughter & joy for those unperturbed by extreme gore and extreme nonsense.

This is such a terrible film; there are massive plot-holes all over the place (especially a literal one at the end), terrible acting/dubbing, hilarious gore effects, weird prison in-mates (they're not the ruthless; they just do a lot of pointing). One thing that isn't terrible about this film is how much god-damn fun it is.

So I'm pretty sure they wrote an original script and then sat around afterwards looking at every scene asking "could this be more ridiculous? could there be more gore?" and until they could truthfully say no, it wasn't done. By the end of the movie I had tears of laughter running down my face.

A standard-bearer for comic grotesquerie, so cartoonishly violent that you occasionally expect Fan Siu-wong's eyes to pop out of his head like a Hugh Fraser drawing.

Having read the original manga - which qualifies as one of the few works of any kind to have both continually kept me on my toes in how off-quilter it goes - this does lose its impact upon re-viewing it, and while it does has its charm in its splatter aesthetics it is diminished by films which combined similar perversities with unexpected moments of depth. That said, rather than merely violent trash, it's blackly humorous Grand-Guignol that is entertaining and never becomes offensive.

With a dumb story, bad acting, terrible editing and mediocre fight choreography, it's almost as if you do not need to see this movie. Then again, a man tries to strangle another man using his own guts. Another man punches through (yes, THROUGH) several other people. Which means this movie is nice.

I want to rate it higher for the literal DAYS of entertainment it gave me in my pizza chef youth, but let's be honest, I was reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally stoned. It's cheesy, kind of fun, kind of unique, really gory, kind of stylish. It's also really cheap and about as well-scripted as those kids movies they used to play on showtime at 10am that had titles like The Skateboard Kid and um... I mean it's bad. If you're on illicit substances, though, give it a whack!

Incredibly violent, very riduculous, yet utterly absorbing due to its unique style. You have probably not seen anything like this. It's not at all what you expect when you see "old chinese martial arts film" because it's not really like that.

You are either in the Riki-Oh cult or you aren't; if you aren’t, your patience will be tested by a dull, confusing and repetitive first hour, spiced by some over-the-top brutality which is amusing in its audacity, but not meaningful or resonant. Cut to the third act, (from the almost crushing defeat inside the jail cell), and you will get an entertaining blood bath, with a particularly insane denouement dispatch of the chief baddie which *almost* allows the film to live up to its reputation.

I'm not normally a fan of gore, but this one goes so over the top, it's hard not to be amused by it all. Its comic-book origin is easy to see as the "battles" get wackier (and, amazingly, more gory each time). Definitely one to see to believe; it probably works better if you already like martial arts films.
