It's a pretty good albeit loose modernization of Dostoyevski in terms of drama, but as a representation of modern police investigation it is beyond unrealistic. I know that's not Kaurismaki's point, but seriously, it's so bad it's distracting. On the plus side, Kaurismaki's signature style is already present in his debut to an impressive degree.

Good debut film but a bit shaky and inconsistent. Amusing and easy to watch through.

By no means bad, but to call it an adaptation is a stretch. "Updated" to 1980s Finland, characters and sub-plots are dropped or merged and only the basic premise remains. The crime in question is committed without any of the original foreshadowing and the demeanour of our protag is much more collected than the original Raskolnikov. Lines, moments and themes are retained but without the context of other things left out, they lose a lot of weight. Half-decent, if significantly watered down stuff.

This early Kaurismaki is very different from his other films. A fairly straight adaptation, although set in modern Helsinki. He alters certain elements, but the essence of the story is there. Although I'd rather read the novel again, I think he did a good job. There's very little of his deadpan humor here. Deadpan, yes. Humor, not so much. You do see (or rather, hear) his use of diegetic music but what's most striking is the use of NON-diegetic music, which is mostly corny and unnecessary.
