There's a very thoughtful, meditative film within if you can look past a few glaring flaws. Irrelevant secondary characters just fill early-to-mid scenes in some misguided sense of establishing a more definitive plot around events. In direct contrast, Tsutomu Yamazaki basically devours every set he inhabits in the role of Hideyoshi, and while his character definitely has a part to play, I wish he took a more toned-down approach to the material. It's worth sticking around for, but I almost didn't
