Enjoyable buddy cop movie is a simplification of Crichton's more complex and interesting novel, but while the film is crippled by some glaring credibility problems (busting into a board meeting to broadcast a snuff film?!), it remains consistently fun thanks to the unexpectedly successful teaming of Connery and Snipes doing adapted LETHAL WEAPON schtick. Plastic TV level direction is frustrating and an overuse of 'wipes' is occasionally distracting.

When I was 13 this was about as complex and compellingly multi-layered a thriller, as I'd ever seen. Revisiting it now some 17 years later, I must admit that it has fated significantly, being quite a bit less sophisticated, than I remember. Still, it has some undefinable appeal to it, stemming perhaps from the neo-noir pastiche feel or Sean Connery speaking Scottish, even when he speaks Japanese...

I had memories of this as a slick neonoir in the style of something like black rain, so was pretty excited to rewatch it after over a decade. Within ten minutes i realized i was only vividly recalling my mental pictures from reading the book bc this was directed in a very typical 90s style. Crichton wrote a good story and that ends up on screen but it lacks a true gripping thriller aspect. The biggest reason to watch this would be Connery

Mediocre script is held together by the (shockingly enough) chemistry between Sniples and Connery. Still not a good film, but it's watchable.

Obvious film stoking the latent xenophobic Japanese takeover fears of the 80's up until the mid 90's. The Japanese characters are all caricatures but this is slightly amusing because of Connery and Wesley Snipe's interaction. Keitel and Tagawa are also joys to watch as always. Overall it's not horrendous but the plot is laughable. Some memorable lines here though.

This film is really slow moving and boring in a lot of places. The actors do a good job but the script is not great. Overall this movie is disappointing.

An absolute gem. Intelligent and likeable characters, a complex(!) story to follow on your first watch. If you don't catch one line, there is a chance you'll not fully understand what is going on.

A nice cultural blend of black-white, young-old, Japan-Scotland-The US set against a murder mystery. Certainly enjoyable and the interplay between the two leads is a charm to behold.

Offensive and lazy japanophobic mess. This is the kind of movie that just lends itself to parody and drinking games, e.g. whenever a reference to sushi is made or whenever zen master Yoda Connery teaches us about Japanese etiquette.
Geishas, taiko drums, Yakuza, even karate, are all represented here, as if the writers were afraid of leaving out any well known aspect of Japanese culture, and at a point I almost expected to see a brief kabuki scene, or at least a sumo fight.

Without any real intrigue and the performances are unremarkable is still a fun film in the first half, with some interesting scenes. It's a trip to the 90's, also very influential in the CSI video analysis techniques.

Dull, convoluted, and no characters worth caring about. Surprisingly bad given the strong cast.

From the time when Japan rather than China organised American fears of enigmatic Asian capitalism. But even at the time this was ridiculous.

I enjoyed Connery and Snipes in this film, and the plot twists keep the intrigue going, but at the end, it's not all that remarkable.

Certainly one of the better Michael Crichton adaptations and certainly Wesley Snipes' best film. Though the technical aspects of the film wouldn't make it any more than good Sean Connery does a superb job as John Connor. It's thrilling without being absurd any the twists are never ludicrous but in fact plausible. If you want a decent thriller this is one to pick up for sure.

Loved the first quarter of the movie, in 'so cheesy it's great' way. After the lieutenants were introduced, it got boring. Some really weird plot twists. I still love the oriental stereotypes, films like this got me interested in Asian traditions.

It was OK, bordering on good. But after a second viewing, it was solidified as just OK. Snipes is tolerable, Connery is above average (for him), and the rest of the cast just blends in with the furniture.

I've seen this several times now, and I still have no idea what to make of it. Maybe it's that I don't buy Connery's performance here, or that a few things that happen feel too random, or that the themes presented felt very cliched and stereotypical. Or maybe it's just me. ;)
