Charles Ruggles feels exceedingly mis-cast for the role of the investigating reporter in this non-comedy. Might be because this is not how we're used to seeing him, but overall this is one of them quirky early talkies with plenty of awkward bits. And don't go expecting recognizing the material inspired by Dashiell Hammett's "Red Harvest". Movie debut of Jimmy Durante who plays the piano and comic relief. More a prototype crime story then anything stand-out.
