A transcendent piece of revolution cinema. Sometimes being wrong is right, goddamn it! Be different, be weird, be revolting! I wept for the entire length of this - it’s surprisingly cutting and provocative. The kids are incredible, the music is stirring, the story is (nearly, could do without the fatphobia) perfect - pointed and poignant. Terrific.

Emma Thompson put everything into her performance. This adaption was quite well done and perfectly over the top. Its certainly not as good as the movie but it holds up well to the play.

Very glad I never went to see this on stage. I like Tim Minchin but almost all these songs are exactly the same and largely pretty crap (thankfully it ends on a high note with Revolting Children). Most of the cast are inferior to the original adaptation, with only Graham and Lynch really holding their own (Thompson is certainly doing SOMETHING, and she is funny, but overall it didn’t work for me). I don’t really know who this version is for except for five year olds who know big words.

Fun enough, and some very good performances by Weir and Lynch in particular, but even if you enjoy the songs (I find them pretty hit-and-miss, more because of the music than the lyrics) it just... lacks that extra something. Everyone's just too GOOD at what they do.

Quite poor and downright interminable at times. In addition to never being able to walk the tonal tight-rope adequately, the songs are very bad and it all feels like an endless barrage of micey children singing. This also suffers brutally from Netflix's dreadful trademark visuals: air-brushed humans that look superimposed upon cheap-looking digital backgrounds, dim lighting, flat color grading, the whole nine yards.

A musical inspired by, but not adhering to, Roald Dahl's Matilda is well-performed, well-made but lacks charm. Some major changes include making Trunchbull more insane (and almost giving her a valid point); making Honey more assertive; making children more actively rebellious rather than mischievous; and making Matilda a psychic story-teller, resulting in a film about showing off rather than finding one's self-confidence. The choreography & lyrics are good, the singing & music are a mixed bag.

I was surprised that I liked this. Enjoyable all around. Thompson was outstanding and was a key reason the movie was this good, she really is an amazing actress.
