The film mainly follows the famous 1597 Battle of Myeongryang during the Japanese invasion of Korea (1592-1598), where the iconic Joseon admiral Yi Sun-sin managed to destroy a total of 133 Japanese warships with only 13 ships remaining in his command. The battle, which took place in the Myeongryang Strait off the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, is considered one of the greatest victories of Yi. (imdb)

First half of the movie is pretty boring, there's a lot of talking but nothing really happens aside from being told constantly of the threat of the Japanese navy. The rest is pretty generic, Hollywood action scenes. Worse is that the movie is a massive stroke on Korea's ego, making the Koreans seem like great heroes while Japanese are all vile, evil assholes, especially at the cost of historical accuracy. The whole film feels like it's Korean propaganda, which makes it laughable.

The first part is boring and second one is total nonsense.

Action-war films are usually an extravagant tale of bravado which gives one an escape from realism making it entertaining. Of-course, a mildly decent plot must be present for things to work out. Usually people (at least me) don't try to look for subtleties in such movies. Just sit back and enjoy this in high pitched sound and savor a tale of courage.

I may be developing a soft spot for korean action melodrama. Really cool action in the second half.
