Wellman’s ability to grab the hero out of the downtrodden will always be great. Like most of his movies a movie about freedom and how to achieve it. Violent for the times. A little too over the top to be a top tier thing but love a movie that dares to question the racist past of the country

It's funny watching a racist movie that projects an antiracist viewpoint.

Questionable casting for this Mexican bandit story from MGM. Warner Baxter as a Mexican was a curious choice. Not natural. But Baxter is a hard working actor and actually does make it work! The other thing is that this is fairly violent for a 30s movie, but in a weird way MGM mixes it with that phony joy and glamor of Hollywood style Mexicans. You don't know if one should appreciate the spirit or puke the baloney. It's lively and quite daring too!
