A sort of tragicomedy/adventure film, "Robin and Marian" picks up the Robin Hood legend some twenty years after most versions of the story, with Robin and his sidekick Little John returning to their old Sherwood haunts world-weary from the Crusades and their sickening brutality... (imdb)

A fine beginning that decides to do nothing with them. A laughable sword battle near the end of it provides about the only memorable item in that second half.

First 20 minutes were good and set the tone and pace... for a different film, evidently. The remainder of the film is slow and uneventful, it drags on and on, and culminates in an awesome sword fight (I know some people don't like it, but I found it painfully gritty and realistic) which again seems to belong to a different film altogether. Robin and Marian ends with a strange, shocking, overtly satanic, and once again misaligned with the rest of the film finale.

A fascinating concept and perfect casting (especially Connery and Hepburn who positively glow as the title characters) hampered somewhat by Lester's strange, uncertain direction; works best when detailing the sincere rekindling of the passions between Robin and Marian, but a determined focus on age and decay (a rotten apple is a fine image to leave the audience with!) and a sense of humour which borders on the snide and contemptuous sucks much of the spirit of fun and joy away.

An attempt to do something different with the Robin Hood story that just doesn't quite make it, despite a great cast

Tries to tell a perhaps more realistic variation of the Robin Hood story - great kudos for original idea, even if the effect isn't the greatest.

there's a beautiful film in here about the sun setting on a legend, pitched less like a reunion romp than a weary, nostalgic reclamation of identity in the face of encroaching death. unfortunately its elegy struggles to really flourish amidst the rushed pacing, flat staging, saccharine score and lame sexist jokes, but it's sincere, at least, and houses a smattering of grace notes.

Em honra de Sean Connery (1930 - 2020). https://letterboxd.com/ladyspiggott/film/robin-and-marian/

Goldman's original script must have been -- or otherwise ought to have been -- intended as a rumination on middle-aged malaise in the Middle Ages. However, under Lester's sour-apple direction, a bit callous and a lot capricious, it is no longer easy to tell what was intended: something mythic, or something realistic, or something satiric.

Not a eventful script - but Hepburn/ Connery/ Harris a delight to watch.

Richard Lester's career was a rich and varied one; I go from his tragi-comic romance PETULIA, to his tragi-comic Robin Hood film. Robin (Sean Connery) is aged and scarred, Marian (Audrey Hepburn) is a nun, Richard the Lion-Heart (Richard Harris) has become psychotic, and so forth. At times, the film feels more like a concept than an actual story, but Lester's elegaic, melancholy mood and the fine acting (especially Nicol Williamson's Little John) make it worthwhile. And God, what an ending.

Richard Lester is a director I have great difficulty liking. This film was Audrey's comeback, but the costumes are dreary, the lighting is harsh and the story is dull.
