Excellent action film that is a blend of hyperviolent imagery, brilliantly cynical satire, a compelling central narrative concerning the loss and return of humanity, and more sheer exuberant energy than any other film in this genre and period.

A nearly perfect film, increasingly profound (and therefore WAY ahead of its time). Forget there was a franchise and look at its narrative as existential art of where man meets machine; political allegory is unrestrained in the boardroom and faux-commercials interspersed; with violence that augments the exaggeration of its profound subject matter. Always amazing.

This is more than some second rate sci fi/action flick. This is an indictment of the 80's. By looking down the slippery slope to the future, Paul Verhoven produces a masterpiece. Crime, drugs, television all masterfully skewered through the inevitable fusion of man and machine.

I never cease to be stunned that there are people who do not like Robocop. Functionally it's a brilliant action movie; Peter Weller really, er, brings the robot to life, the music is superb, the design and effects are of an exceptionally high standard and Kurtwood Smith makes a fantastic baddy. But it's got satire and intelligence to back up the nuts and bolts and it hasn't aged a day in either regard.

Kickass movie, and that's not just the nostalgia talking. It holds up well today, thanks to a depth and attention to detail that is rarely found in this genre. (Edit: I originally gave this a score of 68 because I am legitimately retarded. This is obviously the greatest movie ever made. I'd write a better review but honestly, no words will ever do this justice. It is the Sagrada Familia, Mont St. Michel, Rembrandts "The Night Watch", Hamlet and all the bacon in the world all rolled into one.)

Impressive sci-fi action shooter to come out of the 80's that actually does touch on issues such corporate greed, consumerism, human nature and identity, usually using black comedy. Of course if you're just in it for the action then it's good enough in that respect as well. While I don't think it's Verhoeven's best, it's an impressive film that is more than just robotic violence.

This brilliantly subversive movie amply delivers on both the action and lampoon levels, weaving abrupt and senseless violence into Verhoeven's deadpan dissection of America's corporate lusts, trashy sitcom culture, and pandemic greed for power, speed, and general *bigness* -- in cars, guns, and bank accounts. As the title character, Weller plays a Detroit lawman-turned-cyborg with a gait that should be registered with the Ministry of Silly Walks. A must for action, sci-fi, and satire fans alike.

It is both smarter and more entertaining than it would appear at first sight - Verhoeven is at the top of his game and weaves dark corporate satire and his patented over-the-top violence together into a fully satisfying package. Through news reports and ads he immerses us in this world, allowing the characters (bolstered by the great acting) to shine and drive the heart of the story. Too bad Verhoeven's career crashed and burned so soon afterword.

Good action flick with one of the most memorable villains of all time, Clarence Boddicker (Miguel Ferrer is excellent as well). It's not typically mentioned with the best action movies of the 80s (Aliens or Die Hard), but it's better than something that usually gets a lot of acclaim like Predator (which is a decent movie in it's own right).

Paul Verhoeven, who also directed Starship Troopers and Total Recall, explores some of the goofiest action territory around, and then proceeds to gift his films with insane, over-the-top subtext critical of such topics as fascism and violence in the media. It's brilliant how much an unsubtle sledgehammer like this can still go over people's heads. Almost as brilliant as the film itself, one of the great 80's actioners.

Paul Verhoeven's first major film and one of his best. Robocop is a great action/sci-fi flick with a critical eye for commentary on 1980's America which is shown wonderfully through 'commercials' interspersed in the film satirizing everything from healthcare, the news media and of course Corporate America. Really worth checking out if you like smart action flicks.

Paul Verhoeven is a master of satire and this is one of his finest pieces of work. Yeah, it is an over the top 80s action film (when it was ok to have body counts the USA army would be proud of), but somehow was highly addictive to watch. It may be seen as cheesy now, but it is only cheese because other attempted to copy it or poked fun at it. Still, enjoy it for the midnless action movie and then watch it again to enjoy it for the satirical look on 80s USA.

Paul Verhoeven is a very good director. There, I said it. He has a rep for making schlock, but he squeezes good, visceral drama out of everything he's filmed, even when the premise is totally stupid and the movie is lousy. Robocop, however, is really brilliant, and it finds room for cutting satire and heartbreaking pathos in a movie about a cyborg cop. The dialogue crackles and the bad guys are so heartless, you can't wait for them to get torn up by bullets. Everything it should be and more.

"RoboCop" is awesome for many reasons. It bloody, violent, and action packed, but is also a solid and well executed piece of spectulative near-future sci-fi. Verhoeven presents a daft, but somehow surprisingly realistic and unsettleing dystopia. "RoboCop" never takes itself too seriously, but the well judged direction and performances gives the brutality an edge of silliness. A bonafide action classic. Verhoeven doesn't do enough of this!

An absolutely iconic film and one of the pinnacles of 80s action cinema. The design of Robocop and ED-209 as sci fi creations are unsurpassed to this day. While the script isn't anything special, how many great one liners does this film have? and not just from Robocop. The supporting cast, such as Smith, Cox and Ferrer do stellar work which was necessary when the hero is so ... er ... robotic. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. On the militarization of the police, on the blithely cheerful bellicosity of the media, on the privatization of civil society, on the perversely contradictory incentives promoted by profit motive, on the incapacity of capitalism to respect the sanctity of even as seemingly an impassible threshold as life & death. Even the goofiness of Robocop himself speaks to how generations growing up on fundamentally cartoonish models of strength & security draw upon them and seek to make them real.

Verheoven manages to weave in the best satire ever made in a largely by-the-numbers plot and many, many moments of excess. The tone exemplifies the satire, playing on Reagan-era runaway business models and Verhoeven's obvious disdain for American culture in the 80's. The obvious flaw with this work is that anyone unfamiliar with that particular period in American culture may have this fantastic work go by them, unaware of this brilliant criticism happening right before their eyes.

Delicious satire, all the way down to the white knight leitmotif. Lots of classic fx and great performances in a surprisingly realized dystopia. An interesting take on a not too distant future, although I thought the society itself could've been fleshed out more. RoboCop succeeds on many levels, but the one I'm most impressed with is in making us actually feel something for the cyborg at the heart of the film, with moments of surprising emotion at the core of what could have been a throwaway Terminator knock-off. One of the best action films of the 80s. The design, story, and score (by the late Basil Poledouris, perhaps best-known for his score to the epic Conan the Barbarian) come together to flesh out the decay of future Detroit as well as the technology questionably developed in order to save it. Peter Weller is excellent, as are the bulk of the supporting cast, even if the villains are largely stock corporate thugs. The satire works well here, which Verhoeven later revisited with Starship Troopers.

RoboCop is one of the best films of the 80's and one of my all time favourites. Paul Verhoeven balances every element perfectly. The story telling, action, set pieces, practical effects, score, violence and overall brutally shocking tone and satire make this on the most important films of the 80's. "Your move, Creep". Classic! I probably would have rated it even higher back when I saw it the first time, when I was younger and more prone to praise action movies. But it is still very much worth watching today. The settings and style are working well and the character alone is one for the history books. So many hilarious little details and anarchistic directorial touches. (Viewed in 2014): Robocop is the best genre satire of trickle down economics and the corrosive effects of unfettered privatisation ever made. Its unique mix of extreme violence, sardonic wit and cracked commentary is brilliantly blended, and Verhoeven directs with furious economy. I wasn't amazed by this movie at any point but it does have a certain playfulness with its satire that mixes uncommonly well with pretty brutal violence. That's not an easy tonal shift to make.
