"You kids want rock? I'll give you rock." Then they drench this thing in Cat Stevens.

Murray, Levinson, and company try but they can't overcome the absolutely bland, unfunny, and predictable screenplay. How the screenplay managed to attract so many talented people, yet still fail is completely beyond me.

Uneven and unfocused comedy is still shaggily charming, probably in direct proportion to the viewer's affection for Murray, who's ideally cast as the smug smart arse. The film has a little too much on its plate at times, but is at its best when it focuses on the light comedy of Murray as a fish out of water. Deschanel's abrupt disappearance early in the film is a disorienting plot point, and it's a shame Hudson and Willis aren't given more of substance to do.

So the critics on R/T are giving this an 8%. Whoa. I'm usually not that far off the consensus and was deciding not to go see it when I think, hold on just a minute, WTF. It has a stellar cast, a respectable director at the least, and the trailer looked promising. Yeah, I haven't appreciated much of Murray's stuff lately, but this is good, not great but really good. I can only think of two possible negatives, one, of course, being political. The lib media might be reacting to the portrayal of Mus

Rock the Kasbah just doesn't work as a good film. It's an unfunny comedy that has a tonal and narrative shift half way through, never really finding a worthwhile point. Murray muddles through the film in a semi-watchable fashion. Hudson is surprisingly good, as is Moayed (the taxi driver). The focus on the American characters in a half-arsed "inspired by a true story" biopic of a girl singing in Afghan Star is utterly pointless.

Rather lame script with basically every single plot point being driven by an unlikely coincidence. The actors do fine but aren't given a whole lot interesting to do or say.

Bill Murray has the comedically cantankerous genius-in-his-own mind shtick down pat. And he unleashes it again in Rock the Kasbah, to markedly mixed effect. At times, Richie Lanz is unexpectedly delightful. Other times, he's a narcissistic boor. (pluggedin.com)

This movie tries a little to hard at times. The cast does a good job here but the script only has a few good moments overall. Everyone has done better work before in better movies.

I absolutely despise Idol-type talent shows! And it doesn't matter if they take it to Kabul and have Bill Murray as a eccentric music biz has-been managing the cover artist. It's still Idol crap! There are other stuff, like the warzone road trip and Murray rocking the Afghan village with Smoke on the Water that bring at least a smile, but this does not Rock the Kasbah (2015)!
