A teenager tackles the mysteries of life, love and public speaking in Rocket Science, a wry comedy of adolescent angst. Life is not easy for teenager Hal Hefner. His parents have split, his older brother is an obsessive-compulsive and he has an unpredictable stutter. Given that his active mind and quick wit tend to be obscured by his problematic voice, Hal is not an obvious candidate for his school's high-powered debate team... (Picturehouse Entertainment)

The quirkiness of it all should be offputing; The stuttering, the narration, the aimless plot, the silly character traits, the overused music, they're all things that on their face would annoy me to the point of hating the movie, but they didn't. For some reason I was drawn into the film, had some good laughs and generally enjoyed a story that simultaneously went nowhere and yet still achieved something.

Far fewer rockets than I was led to believe, but still manages to be charming (utterly disproving the age-old rocket-to-charm ratio). The tiny victory at the movie's close was one of the most realistic and satisfying endings I've experienced in a while, proving that to be a winner, the plucky hero doesn't always have to save the world from asteroid-induced cataclysmic doom, blow up the mothership, or get the smoking hot girl with the deformed thumbs to sleep with him.

"It's one of those two, love or revenge," says ninth-grader Hal Hefner in explaining his motivation. It's the kind of rationale that can turn a nice, lightly absurd teen comedy into something dark or cynical, but Rocket Science tiptoes on the tipping point, does a couple of those oh-no-I'm-losing-my-balance arm-waving things, then floats gently back to earth, its parasol of earnestness setting it down right where it should, in the land of hope and optimism.

Too boring. Usually when I'm drunk I can pay attention to a movie, not this trite BS. Thanks but no thanks.

It's kind of stupid but kind of cool. The music is terrible and the voice over narration (Alec Baldwin) annoyed me but it was pretty funny and I didn't mind it. Wouldn't watch it again though.

A strong lead character, but a story that doesn't quite consistently engage

A very quirky independent film filled with unique characters. The actors do a fine job with their roles but the story never really goes anywhere. There are a few funny moments but I find the film has no real payoff.

Rocket Science is a movie that would have worked better had it not tried to be so "indie." It could have been an affecting drama about a kid and his stutter, but this effort is undermined by the weirdness of the majority of the supporting characters. The two leads are good, the main character feels genuine, some of the lines are really funny, and I appreciated how it stuck with its decisions instead of trying to backtrack on them to be pleasing. It's a good, not great independent production.

Juno, Thumbsucker, The Squid and the Whale... Big yawns all round. Little Miss Sunshine was ok. I don't like this mainstream indie-style nonsense. There is nothing to recommend about this film, but it wasn't bad either, just pointless.

Everything in this movie is just mediocre. Didn't really love it but on the other hand didn't really hate anything in it either.

I liked this a lot. I had to go to speech therapy as a kid so it obviously hit me in a deeper way than most.

Cleverly written. Comedic timing was spot-on. Loved the subtle joke with "Add It Up." Really appreciated the entirely plausible plot developments.

This film owes a lot to Wes Anderson. But like, not in a good way. I found the hardcore stammering unwatchable. It wasn't handled very well.

This approaches being great but never quite reaches it. Despite that it's a really enjoyable, I'm even tempted to call it "off-beat" but I hate that term, so I won't. The subtly distorted setting is very well put together.

Well build stuttering character and a hot, hot Anna Kendrick. Unfortunately it did not make a good arc in the end. But the way to go did entertain me, kept glued to the screen.

In movies, stuttering usually annoys me, so I didn't expect to like this, but I did. This script is clever and the actors deliver it well. The more I think about it, the more I like this film.

This is the sort of film that doesn't necessarily inspire a whole lot of excitement in and of itself, but holds enough promise that it develops anticipation for the filmmaker's next offering. The narrative holds some comically cruel twists and, more importantly, diverges from the well-worn paths it starts down in refreshingly honest ways. In the end, it feels a touch too slight and, except a nice performance by Kendrick as a hyper-verbal overachiever, has few elements that are truly memorable.

Rocket Science has a good vibe to it, though Hal's stuttering can be quite stress-inducing at times. The film is well-paced with plenty of little funny moments, even if at times the character motivation behind the plot feel a bit aimless; though isn't that just life as a teen. The performances are slightly more developed than the characters. The small victory at the end makes the film.
