This movie isn't very good, but it is interesting - in the way the script is sexist, yet punishes characters for being so; in the utterly predictable love story that turns into a complete downer ending; in the conservatism of its setup that turns into a strident anti-nuke message; in the way it influenced science fiction movies far more than the superior-in-almost-every-way film it was ripping off, Destination Moon.

Inconsistent sexism and selective gravity aside, Rocketship X-M is not a *bad* movie. It's just... very dull. When something is actually going on, it's actually quite good, with solid acting and writing. It carries a somewhat underaddressed message about the dangers of nuclear weapons--a ballsy move for its time.

Profoundly boring. If you love watching long monotonous sequences of rocket piloting that don't reflect actual rocket dynamics, followed by scientists being quickly owned by Martians, then boy howdy this is for you.

a group of scientists traveling to the moon in a giant dildo, but missing it and landing to Mars instead, where they fight with Martian cavemen...

I see, so you overshot the Moon and landed on...Mars. Wow--that's pretty freaky (betcha you couldn't do that again though).

Mystery Science Theater. Actually not that awful for an MST3K selection. I could almost watch this on its own.

In itself, not the best of films. I watched the MST3K version which gets a 4 star for being the first episode to feature TV's Frank and the final voice of Tom Servo. The film itself is a bit plodding and half assed when its gets down to it. BUT it does score points for having the balls to end the way it does,

One of the first films of the new space era, and while a simple and outlandish take on space travel, it's got it's charms and we do learn that Mars really is red!
