Set against the bright lights of Manhattan, a tale which takes a comic, urbane look at the modern male ego at war in the singles scene trenches. Roger Swanson is a hopelessly cynical advertising copywriter with a razor-sharp wit who believes he has mastered the art of manipulating women. But Roger's seemingly foolproof world of smooth talk and casual sex begins to unravel when he is paid a surprise visit by his teenager nephew, Nick... (imdb)

Watch it once and ejoy it's slick dialogue and Campbell's performance. Repeat viewings are not nearly as fun or insightful.

This was absolutely terrific, if uncomfortable, stuff. Not enough people have seen it, frankly.

Great performances from the cast, especially Scott, and a nice and thorough visuel style. It's a shame director Kidd chose an optimistic ending, which doesn't seem to fit the film's tone and mood. Had the last five minutes ended on the cutting room floor, Roger Dodger would have been an indie masterpiece.

Campbell Scott is superb in this memorable character study.

I like witty dialogue as much as the next guy, but it felt too scripted to be believable as a character's on the spot, slightly inebriated musings. It constantly took me out of the story, and while I like the characters and almost everything else I couldn't help but continually ask to myself, "Who talks like that?" Definitely worth a watch though.

Its focus on the single night with the long dialogue scenes makes it feel like a play. And the movies does hinge on those dialogues. But luckily Scott and Eisenberg deliver. Scott's portrayal of Roger, leaning between charismatic and chaotic is refreshing and Eisenberg gets to play his identifiable awkward kid. I suppose they could've cut the last five minutes to keep the ending in tone with the rest of the movie, but that doesn't change the experience.

Cambell Scott does a fantastic job running the gamut character wise. A funny and touching coming-of-age movie.

ROGER DODGER is appealing for adults who enjoy dating comedies with a bit of bite, especially for those mature enough to see that there's more to a person than the superficial.

Outstanding character study. Good example of when it's okay to have a main character who's far from likeable.

Worth seeing for Campbell Scott, he's good, the problem though is that his character is set up as an obvious straw man. The player with an empty soul cliche. Oh please. A man who knows how to get laid easily is a happy and fulfilled man content with life. Hope that hurts.

Obnoxious and superficial, which is the point, but that doesn't make it any better. And that ending is definitely an eye-roller.

I think that Campbell Scott, the dude who plays Roger, talks in fake 1950s voice. Weird. But it might just be how he actually talks. I don't know. It doesn't really matter. Writing in this movie is off the hook. This Dylan Kidd fella, he needs to do some more stuff.

It's sometimes "amusing" in the way that watching a train-wreck might be, but I definitely wouldn't call it a comedy.

I get what it was trying to do and the dialogue was clever at times, but damn was this nauseating with the handheld cam that has to constantly remind you it's still there, with each and every shot. You realize right away the uncle's spouting pseudo intellectual BS. I suppose a different movie may have presented him as an awesome guy and then slowly chip away at the façade. Fav scene: when the two women ditch the uncle and call him out. Too often other movies present women as unsuspecting dolts.

Full of red pilled wisdom. Would be sorta great if only not for the weak ending.

Feels like the last gasp of the smugly hip 90s indie, and your tolerance of those is likely to dictate your reaction to this - Scott's one-man wrecking ball of smarm is difficult to like, but it's a truly fine and horrifically magnetic performance, matched by a more guileless Eisenberg (has he ever aged?) If Harry didn't have Sally to balance him out, you would probably get this coldly cynical look at male-female relationships, compromised somewhat by the abrupt and inconclusive finale.
