Idealistic young Koichiro is the sensitive artistic type; he longs for success as a violinist. Worse luck, he's a small-town boy from the Hokkaido provinces: if he hopes for success as a fiddler, he'll have to up sticks (fiddlesticks?) and move to Tokyo. Koichiro's practical-minded father Yasushi is dead-set against this, and Yasushi has an even better reason for his argument: Koichiro has a wife and young daughter. (imdb)

The story was good although a bit too complicated for no good reason. The direction and techniques were really basic. I'm glad I watched it.

One of the very earliest surviving features from Japan's mostly lost silent era. It's a long and complicated drama where several densely intercut subplots ultimately converge to tell a tragic Christmas story(!), on the importance of charity and mercy. (It also features a Japanese Mary Pickford stand-in cavorting in her sailor suit around her Western style mansion for a big Christmas party featuring yagibushi dancers).
