The style of this film falls somewhere between the neorealists of Italy and the films of Rene Clair. Overall, a lovely and poetic film, but some elements seem somewhat forced. Vittorio de Sica's character is fantastic.

There is a certain grittiness about Marcello Pagliero's Roma città libera [Rome: Free City] (1946), but as a whole it felt like a very average experience. I also struggled with the chemistry between the actors. So a little off for me personally. That's not to say there isn't a lot of quality aspects to this downtown romance. Just a little uneven, I felt.
