Romeo Must Die

2000
Romance, Suspense/Thriller
1h 55m
In this modern day Romeo and Juliet, kung fu action star Jet Li plays Romeo to hip-hop singer, Aaliyah Haughton's Juliet. Li is an ex-cop investigating the murder of his brother, who had ties with the Chinese mafia in America. Aaliyah plays the daughter of the American mob boss. Neither side approves of their romance, so, obviously, kung fu action ensues, with a soundtrack by Aaliyah. (imdb)

Some of the fighting is pretty neat but Aaliyah isn't a very good actress and always looks like she's spent half the day getting her hair and makeup done. Nothing too special here although Jet Li shattering ever single vertibrae in his opponents spine is worth a laugh.

Cool fight sequences, okay story, but the rest of it kind of sucks.

Jet Li can amaze off the wires, but since this film became obsessed with techniques used in "The Matrix" immediately following its release thanks to producer Joel Silver, it comes off a bit ridiculous. And yeah, it has nothing to do with Romeo and Juliet.

It had me reminiscing over Aaliyah. She was by far the best thing about this movie. The rest was quite painful to watch.

Why do all of Jet Li's American movies look like hip-hop music videos? The action is mostly nonsensical, sometimes going full Mortal Kombat and showing x-ray skeletons. There's a part where Jet Li uses Aaliyah's body like a pair of nunchucks. The cinematography is generally incompetent; if a shot isn't zooming in on someone's ass then it's probably a pointless dutch angle or a shot that is meant to be capturing action but is instead focused on some large obstruction in the foreground

Skilfully executed wire-fu doesn't entirely make up for ridiculous acting and jarring jumps into CGI.

Well, it's got Jet Li kicking people's ass, so that's cool, but as far as martial arts films go, it sorta sucks.

A totally incomprehensible story. CGI as a total crutch. Mediocre action. Plus, I watched it with a bunch of people who kept going, "That was awesome! Did you see how he tackled that guy?" I'll tell you how he tackled that guy. Green-screening.

The stunt work and production are up to Joel Silver standards. Some ponderous scenes trying to make us care about whatever & the obvious revealing of plot are not so good. The flash edited sometimes hard to follow fight scenes are a disappointment, nevertheless they hardly fail to amuse & sometimes thrill.

The fact that I came out the other side of this wondering if it was a bad action film or a bad romantic comedy probably says everything. Some bizarre special effects sequences that add nothing to what's happening on screen were typical of a disjointed, cobbled-together mess of a story. And I'm also confused by DMX's star billing when I counted 3 appearances totaling about 45 seconds of run time.

It sure is bad, but at the same time, you can't hate it. Jet Li schoolin' the brothers in the subject of American football is a fantastic scene. I also don't think I've seen a non-blaxploitation American movie with so few white people in it.

serviceable action movie. story is predictable, but, unlike alot of these types of movies -- especially ones directed by bartkowiak -- the story is not vile and intolerably stupid. it helps that the majority of the cast puts on a decent show as well. most importantly, with a few odd exceptions (crappy cgi of skeletal damage) the action is actually done and shot well.

There's a great fight scene early in "Romeo Must Die" during which Han (Jet Li), a good ex-cop unjustly imprisoned in a jail, breaks free even though he's surrounded by guards hung upside down by a chain around one foot and handcuffed. Jackie Chan's got impishness, Chow Yun-Fat's got soul, but 36-year-old Li, with his mild gaze and perpetual whisper of a smile, has got swiftness and grace. And the dignity and ingenuity with which he dispatches his tormentors and slips his bonds is a

I can't help but imagine Jet Li and Aaliyah in the disco as a scene that was painfully hard to film and observe for every party involved in every aspect - maybe barring Jet Li, that is; he seems to have enjoyed being a part of it with his baseball hat and smug "I can't believe I'm doing this" smile on his face, chewing bubble gum and kicking ass. Well, apart from the last part. A very stale film.

Bringing singers or musicians to the movie, is usually worked as a curse. Here Aaliyah is giving hope that some singers are fitting to scenes. Well, DMX is still hopeless. Jet Li on other hand performing superbly and i think that this is the best Jet Li -movie. Fight scenes are amazing.

ROMEO MUST DIE is a film that I've seen countless times as a kid, being the massive fan of Jet Li that I was. It's somewhat marketed as a "martial arts take" on the classic Romeo & Juliet tale. I don't agree. Yes, two households that fight, yes, a slight romance...but that's just the foundation. The rest is its own thing, most of which isn't THAT memorable on rewatch - but the fighting is expertly carried out. Jet Li is a GOD among martial arts men.

More a distant cousin to Shakespeare than anything resembling a genuine adaptation - an overlong and overly familiar Seagal/Norris/Bronson style actioner, hampered by Li’s soft spoken persona which makes the whole film more breezy and relaxed than it should be, undermining the tension for the so-so action scenes, (likely to be rendered duller the more familiar you are with JC’s superior work). Lindo provides solid support work as usual and Aaliyah makes for a charismatic and appealing heroine.
