Standard actioner is an entertaining time-killer but not much more - unfortunately it finds leading man Lancaster in dull and wooden mode, but the CASABLANCA supporting cast is superb, with Rains great as always, and Henreid especially good, as the slimy and venal villian.

This film felt like a remake of Casablanca with a different leading man in Lancaster, who relating with is challenging. Overall I'd call "Rope of Sand" watchable but not something to seek out.

While the story is completely different, I couldn't help get Casablanca vibes from Rope of Sand (1949). Don't know why. Perhaps because Paul Henreid is there, though he plays a bad guy here, and is quite a interesting character. He was the one that made this film cool for me. Or maybe it was just the mind games going on in a exotic location. Either way, Burt Lancaster comes off looking good, with a weird but fascinating chemistry with Corinne Calvet that couldn't help create a smile on my face.
