petzold’s films tend to create absorbing atmospheres where the audience is guided by the same indescribable desires that the characters are drawn to or run away from - but with enough awareness thanks to the film form, which is not afforded to the characters. this is why he is great at telling moral tales without judgment. it’s pure, minimalist cinema in that sense as all there is vibey observations. and his use of sound……..

I have never watched a movie that was more boring than this one!

It was so funny, but in a way that made me feel bad about myself for thinking it is funny. (And the movie was slightly hurting on a personal level, ouch.)

A guy who hates himself falls in love with a girl he’s supposed to hate. Quite nerve wracking at times since I couldn’t decide which subject I’m more in favor.

First ever Petzold comedy, and it feels amusing all the way, as we follow this annoying writer trying to work in a beach house slowly surrounded by a forest on fire, watching people doing sexy, fun or just plain normal (like fixing the roof) stuff instead -- friend who owns the place, woman spending time there, lifeguard who comes in sometimes. So precise, restrained and evidently funny in such subtle ways -- way he looks at people, says shit all the time, sleeps everywhere. Beautiful last shot.

A slow burning German drama set in a fast burning forrest beneath a smoky red sky. Winner of The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at The Berlin International Film Festival. "Afire" is a psychologically sophisticated film about art, love, tragedy and the creative process. An intriguing character study that is both human and very realistic. Petzold's apocalyptic vision is complex, heartbreaking and subtle. An emotional, surprising and fascinating story that lingers in the mind long after the credits.

This movie is falling in place after the last 20 minutes of play.

Unfortunately, I enjoy this less than expected: the first act was pretty boring and that ending?? They really buried they gays in the year 2023?? Still, it had some nice ambience and cool music.

What initially seems like a relatively slight effort by Petzold, eventually comes into its own, as the characters reveal unexpected depth and the situation takes some dramatic turns.

A low key story but beautifully acted and I found myself caring about the characters.

More like ASLEEP—as in, that's how you'll end up.

Loved it from the opening moments. This has an ineffable quality that hooked me immediately. Petzold is taking us somewhere and is in full control of the form. Everything is working in concert together, but in a simple, minimalist sphere. Beautiful scenes of ash falling or at the sea, but the film gripped my heart in the brief exchange between Leon and Nadja after she crashes the bike--such great vulnerability there, even if we still don't know where the film is going.

An introspective glimpse into the life of a writer that isn't a very interesting person.
