A legitimately amusing absurdist conceit that works as a three minute trailer loses nearly all of it's charm and becomes grating when extended to a feature film, largely because of it's misguided attempt to combine the worst pretensions of both Quentin Tarantino and Michael Haneke (resulting in a film that would probably please neither of them, let alone the audience). Pretty good soundtrack though, i have to admit, although there should have really been more of it and less of everything else.

Pointless, even though they try to make that fact the point. The embodied audience concept isn't completely worthless but it proves a failed experiment at best. The ridiculousness of it all holds a certain appeal but the film, inevitably, becomes very.... tyre-some. Ahem.

Q: How do you fuck up a movie about a killer tire? A: Make it into a self-aware pretentious wank-fest. This god-awful meta-movie is the equivalent of ordering a hot-dog at a drive-thru and when you pull up to the window, a half-assed Godard look-alike pops out and ejaculates a steaming wad of semen into your eye while screaming "THIS IS MY INTERPRETATION OF A HOT DOG!!! IT"S ABSURD LOOOOOOL" Do yourself a favor and watch the trailer. It's a great fucking trailer and an abysmal fucking movie.

Watched it in Strasbourg Fantastic Film Festival. It was yet another example of how hard it is to be cheeky. When you cut the rope where the disbelief has been suspended , then it is very hard to make the movie roll. The rest of the audience seemed to enjoy it but it was too pointless for my taste. "But, that is thexact point" the director would say; my answer to that would be "No, you just made a bad movie"

One of my biggest pet peeves is when a movie accomplishes the exact opposite of what it set out to do. You can't claim to celebrate the pointlessness of movies, only to prove some asinine point afterwards without indulging in your own purported meaninglessness. Had the potential to be oh-so great, but instead gets spoiled by its own bullshit philosophy.

"No reason" is correct. This movie delivers a message at that: The message is clearly that you can waste someone's free time with a tire walking, sorry... rolling around killing things. The pacing is terrible and it tries its best to make fun of itself. Terrible for it's own good, but it did have some genuinely funny moments and a low budget that worked just fine, though I can't say I would ever want to watch this ever again.

Awful. Fucking shit. The subtext is about as painfully idiotic as the actual text is irritating. It works as neither a meta-commentary nor as a movie in and of itself, and is actually dumber and less entertaining than the films it's trying to mock. Also, see amerigo's review.

A story of a tire that wants to hurt people and the people that watch it do so and the people that make those people do so but are also the people who get hurt by the tire who also knows it is being watched by the people who were told to watch it. A very inventive, funny, self-referential movie that takes traditional B-movies and flips them upside down. Proves you don't need a big budget to make a good movie. Action is slow but the humour is always there.

As social commentary this movie is crap, becoming what it criticizes. As an off-the-cuff horror/comedy it's definitely worth a watch. A word of advice, it's better watched in a group because some of the lines are pretty quotable and who wants to quote a movie to themselves?

A movie so far up it's own ass, if you tried to reach for it you'd pull out a philosophy degree. You can't start the movie with a heavy handed metaphor that the movie is dedicated to the "no reason"'s in movies just because you have characters that aren't believable and act stupid just to move a plot forward. The movie would have worked as a 10 minute horror comedy about a tire killing people, instead it just ends up being pretentious garbage that's full of itself.

There is no reason I watched this to the end after realizing in the first 10 minutes it was going to be a disappointment. Only someone high on wormwood and bleu cheese mold will think this movie is any deeper than the 3-foot pool into which our rubber hero dives. ("But that's the point!" I know, I know... /sigh) My suggestion: watch the trailer and pretend that the movie was just as good.

I'm not sure what it was that didn't sell the movie. Maybe the concept was just too awkward to carry itself as a feature. Maybe it didn't explore the no 4th-wall idea it set up enough in order to send any real message. Or maybe it didn't fully indulge in the killer tire aspect. A movie about a psychic tire killing people would have been better without the forced postmodernism.

Padded with about an hour of extra whimsy at 90 minutes, this absurdist satire on horror film tropes would've worked far better as a short film. The WTF beginning is as engrossing as bizarre films get, but it's a long uninspired slog from then till the end.

One time my friend's mom was driving us to soccer practice and some wheel fell out of a truckbed and just started rolling down the highway. It was awesome. It rolled for about a mile right in front of us. It just kept going and going. We were going crazy in the car and my friend's mom just acted it was totally normal. We drove behind it until it hit a bump and spiraled to a stop. It was awesome.

I knew it was a film about a tire, but nothing else, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect beyond something weird. Besides that, though, it has another gimmick that gives everything an extra layer of abstraction and the tone works perfectly so that it's genuinely funny while still having a real sense of horror on several fronts. It's just impressive how many ways there are for this concept to fall apart and yet the whole thing works nearly flawlessly. A great existential comedy.

I know it criticizes other movies and itself but it could be cooler as a short movie. Lastly, I enjoyed "no question can be asked" thing. Well, played, sir, well played. Not what I expected, in fact Dupieux plays with genre, and film in general, expectations, and that's what makes this film weird and unusual. Problem is, he runs out of imagination to the new ways to keep this film going, and towards the end is gets a bit tired (pun intended).

A little overlong, but this is essentially Attack of the Killer Tomatoes a few decades later and a few times smarter. Very funny, and it does actually work on a few levels and has something to say without ever being preachy for a second. Surreal, inventive, and I honestly have no idea how they made that tire roll around like that. Enjoyed it a lot despite flaws that one really should be able to overlook seeing as the killer is a tire. Come on guys. Possibly the ultimate midnight flick

If you don't know, this is the film about a sentient tire with the mental power to blow things up. What you might not know about is the meta framework, in which a group of people watch the events of the film from afar, an event organized and manipulated by some mysterious power and executed by the players. The meta elements get too self-conscious at times, and there's some padding, even at 80 minutes, but it's quite entertaining all the same, and is pretty technically accomplished for the price.

It's very well-made, I grant you, but if you're going to make a film about there being "no reason", don't give it a super pretentious intro and a horribly annoying and distracting running gag of people in the desert watching it! A living tire is a better B-Movie Horror concept than an obscure arthouse piece of self indulgence! If everything in life has no reason, then why'd you make this movie at all Dupieux? Do you really believe that, or were you trying to make Rubber seem deeper?

Rubber is an enjoyable little film starring a killer tire. If that's not enough to get you to watch it, then you might as well skip it anyway, as it's not for you. I give it a equals (based on a scale of negative, equals and plus). I really the enjoyed seeing the tire roll down the highway killing people as it goes. However, this film decided to be super meta and have a group people watching and commenting. Meta aspects can be dangerous to use. Only when they are justified does it enhance the film. The meta aspects were not justified in this film, but still the tire killer story is fun.

Worst movie watched this year (so far). I think everyone sets to watching it due to the obscure premise that has to promise at least for some laughs, but as can be expected, the concept doesn't carry over an entire movie. It's rarely funny and the plot doesn't really make a lot sense, though of course at the very beginning of the movie you are ahahah so hilariously and fourth-wall-breakingly warned about all of this. Might have worked as a short movie, but this is just trash.

dupieux constantly tries to walk between fiction and reality in his films and this is one of his best efforts. it's fun to watch because it doesn't really take itself seriously, but when one risks being pompous, the ways the film plays with the form is interesting - in the sense that it is worth discussing over, from how it treats its audience to the way it sees characters as mouthpieces of the creaters, which opens the film's uncanny reality up to further commentary.

I was expecting this short feature film to overstay its welcome by drawing out the joke of its premise, but what I wasn't expecting was one of the greatest breaks of the fourth wall I've ever seen, that's introduced at the start of the movie and continued on until the end. Although that aspect is not hugely connected with the premise of this killer tire, I still applaud it for being so damn clever and original.

Truly went into this movie wanting to like it, but try as I might I could not. It is a movie with a lot to say, but no interesting way to say it. The idea of this movie is so creative! I loved how the film attempted to bring emotions into a character that is just a plain old tire. You see it come to life and learn how to walk (roll) and then it learns of its terrible power. This power is a power that can blow off peoples heads with a telekinetic power. Now there are a lot of tongue in cheek moments in this film, I really like how the "audience" plays a part in the movie. Roxane Mesquida is also a very pleasant part of this film.

Strangely enjoyable but there are definitely some long, dry stretches. The joke works better as a trailer than as a full length movie, and while there's certainly something more to the film bubbling beneath the surface, it never comes together quite the way you'd hope -- mostly because you can get to the film's conclusions long before it does. Still, the finale / end credits sequence go a long way to make sitting through the whole thing worth the wait.

What amazed me was not the spectators-vs-film-crew speech about the element of no reason -- the thing that makes movies interesting and life irritating --, but the sense that every film is something that defies our minds -- I know it's not real, but is it possible to happen in real life? Rubber plays like The happening -- they both embrace a bizarre, "unfilmable" conflict --, but the first is self-conscious, while the other forces an extreme plot of ou a well-known genre (the disaster movie).
