Nice performances, nice cinematography, nice music... lousy story with tacky ending.

Coppola's artistic ambitions cripple what could otherwise be a pretty good movie. The symbolism is laid on extremely thick, the fish metaphor is as blatant as it gets, the shots are far too stylized and the screenplay is obscenely overwritten. The performances are rather questionable, too, particularly Rourke's. Also, ridiculous ending.

It isn't totally awful, but it is pretty bad. Disappointing considering who made it and the amount of decent actors involved. The metaphors were too obvious and pretty stupid. The ending is a laughably bad metaphor (anything is possible!). The score was really good but sometimes it got in the way of the story. Lastly, Sofia Coppola has to be the ugliest kid I've ever seen, her teeth were about as big as Matt Dillon's eyebrows. 10 points just for that, impressive genes Coppola.

This feels like much more style than substance, but I can't deny that Coppola does some very interesting things with the style. The film visual style is breathtaking and gives a noir feel to what is very much a teen drama. Not everything works, but most of it does, and even when the elements clash it feels appropriate to the film's themes.

It's all about those visuals. If you're not immediately drawn into the surreal, gritty yet angelic black and white of this film, you're not going to get much out of it. Hell of a cast, too.

Starts off really strong, but then it began to meander and lost its focus a bit. Also the Dillon-Rourke dynamic as brothers wasn't really believable IMO. On the other hand, cinematography and soundtrack really stood out, and the direction in general was really good.

So you thought Coppola was all washed up after the 70s.. well, I did, but boy was I wrong. This is a great film! Coppola uses a provocative camera style reminiscent of Touch of Evil with which he creates a gritty, yet surreal atmosphere that suits the mysteriousness of Rourke's character perfectly. The cast is awesome with Hopper, Rourke and Dillon turning in wonderful performances. So if you want an existential film about troubling youth and street gangs, don't hesitate to watch this!

Matt Dillon plays a brainless thug about as well as anyone, and Mickey Rourke is the definition of cool as the Motorcycle Boy. But this movie doesn't ever really seem to grow legs, and the ending is absolutely terrible.

Although Coppola works overtime to insure every shot's ready for a photography exhibit & the pretentious vibe is mostly confined to striking visuals, the story's the usual liberal propaganda society accepts as fact w/ author Hinton & Coppola romanticizing hoodlums & dirtbags who would only do better if society didn't "trap" them - even though the completely shite parenting is right there. It even turns criminality into heroism w/ the inexplicably "wise" MCycle Boy freeing animals by breaking in.

The superior companion piece to The Outsiders. Overlooked in Coppola's oeuvre, Rumble Fish is one of his finest because it flawlessly captures the spirit of the Hinton novel while expanding on the visual style of Coppola's direction. For example, The Motorcycle Boy, brilliantly rendered by Rourke, is something of a mythical figure - the film is in B&W because he's colorblind - although he renounces his legendary status. Splashes of color seem to underline the subtle fabric at work here.

Stylistically innovative, there are several moments in Rumble Fish that recall work produced later in the decade by the new independent movement. Coppola's attempt to create an 'art movie for teenagers' doesn't always work at the level of story, but its gritty, sensual B+W photography captures a vivid twilight world of impoverished youth growing up in a stark dilapidated environment. The symbolism is heavy handed, but the images are memorable, and Rourke is excellent as the Motorcycle Boy.

I dunno, it's kinda icky and I somehow hate it. Weird (not in a good way), stagey and feels more like noir-inspired feature debut of a gay porn director rather than a next film of one of the best directors in 70s Hollywood.

Coppola used to be so good. Insane that he adapted two Hinton novels in the same year and endeavored to make them so radically different. He's said that his intent with RUMBLE FISH was to make a purposefully artful film for teenagers, and I think that's not only a noble cause, but he succeeds. The should show this to kids today; the kids who get on their own makeshift podcasts to gush about the cinematography in the latest Marvel formula. Loved the cinematography, tone, and music.

I think this is the sort of "blank canvas" of a film that allows you to paint any deep and meaningful message onto it that you want .... or, if you dont want to, its just nothing. Beautifully shot, great cinematography, great cast, but a script that mainly consists of the phrases "let's get out of here" and "what man?". I found this really heavy going, but compelling, nonetheless, and I painted on the message that following people blindly can mean you end up going nowhere. Worth watching.

An appropriately dreamlike film about quiet desperation. Mickey Rourke is perfect as a child of the May '68 that didn't take place, as described by Deleuze & Guattari. The film being in black and white could have been utilized more, besides the obvious rumble fish and the (slightly overplayed) shadow play. I'm not sure if the decision is justified currently.

What it lacks in plot and character it makes up for in atmosphere and style. The narrative isn't too fleshed out but there's some very memorable scenes in here. On the outside it seems as if this movie doesn't take itself very serious but it plays around with some pretty interesting concepts.

I think reading this years ago was when I realized stories might not have "endings"; that sometimes things are just left unresolved. It's bugged me ever since. Then there's the fact that there's nobody around the entire movie, and then they all come out in the end. This needed a bit more Fishburne.

It's all right, sometimes with fun scenes and characters but very pretentious most of the time. Also the B&W seems unnatural and the colored fish a common place for the "metaphor", this movie was made with a thick brush. Also I've never liked Diane Lane or Matt Dillon.

Classy, pretentious (gets away with it, in my eyes) style movie by ever-so-inconsistent Coppola. I saw The Outsiders some time ago, and disliked it. I dislike it now even more so, seeing how enjoyable a film Coppola can make with similar source material. Now it's obvious that the book this film is based on isn't much, but cinematography, soundtrack, style is so right, that the story goes beneath film (in a good way). Rourke gives a great performance.

Coppola's second adaptation of a Hinton novel has embraced the legacy of German Expressionism all the way to the black-and-white photography, a bit further, in a sense, than he went in the first, _The Outsiders_. Ostensibly the black-and-white takes its cue from the character of The Motorcycle Boy, who is color-blind. He is also, owing to the ravages of countless street fights, half deaf, and this accounts for another stylistic oddity: the muted, often indistinct dialogue

Loved the aesthetic, especially since it tied into the narrative. The soundtrack was really interesting but occasionally drowned out some words. Smoke and/or fog is everywhere, like the world is invisibly burning down. The family dynamic was a highlight, as was the concept of attempting to live up to an implied, never shown, possibly invented former greatness.

This is a better film than I though it would be as I watched the beginning. Partially because Matt Dillon struck me as very odd initially but by the end I bought his character and felt good about his performance. Mickey Rourke and the young Diane Lane are the ones to watch here; Rourke proves himself on the level of the greats in films around this time and it's impossible to see him in this film and not compare him favorably to Marlon Brando. Dennis Hopper gives a great small performance.

Aesthetically, it's well conceived and constructed, but the story is so fucking silly and borderline nonsensical that it's pretty hard to watch. The best part of this film is Matt Dillon's performance (which is to be expected), but that alone doesn't make it worth watching.
