A truly gritty and nightmarish urban retelling of the fairy-tale classics where Alice is a young boy with a stolen gun, The Mad Hatter is a pimp, The Blue Fairy is a hooker, and the witch in the Gingerbread house is actually a pair of pedophiles. A real down and dirty crime story.

i walked into this movie with almost no respect for walker, especially after those terrible fast and furious movies, but he set a high bar in this one. the story is extremely compelling and has an amazing amount of twists and turns, one of the best thriller/action movies in recent memory.

This felt like it was created in an alternate universe where the only locations are North America and Russia; the only existing fiction genres are crime, action and western; and lawn mowers double as film editing software.

Top badass moment? 9 armed guys in a bedroom, drug dealing; 100 or so shots later, 3 of them walk out alive. That’s either very good fortune or very bad shooting. Regardless, along with its totally unsubtle sound mix, over the top violence and 330 “fucks” (according to IMDB), I’m scared to suggest anything isn’t badass in this film. The story doesn't make much sense, but it’s all delivered with such intensity that it’s not worth worrying about. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Flawed, but ambitious as hell. It didn't feel like an action/thriller at all, and the end credits sequence confirmed exactly what I had suspected. I see a lot of low scores, which is unfortunate, because this is a Dune-level Hollywood oddity. Might get a higher score on repeated viewings.

This movie is the most over-the-top movie I have ever seen in my life by a country mile. And it's completely and utterly awesome. I am blown away. For a while, I was like "This isn't THAT over-the-top." Then came the child pornographers/murderers. And the hockey rink scene. After that I gave up and stopped trying to guess where it would go next. Holy shit. And it doesn't feel cheesy at all. Just a blast to watch, start to finish. Paul Walker is even likable in this!

Exhilarating, but ultimately forgettable action fare. Good performances, but the plot holes become glaring under scrutiny, and the roving camera is often too cute for its own good. It maintains a relentless pace, though.

This is certainly one of the most intense thrillers I've ever seen. Until this film I was never actually impressed by Paul Walker but I'll be damned if I didn't feel the desperation oozing from him. Admittedly the dialog of insults is pretty dumb ("Fuck you you fuck!" "No, fuck you you fucking fuck") but if you can get passed that this is one relentless flick.

The plot is nonsense, but the movie never slows down to let you realize it. It's cool, it's overflowing with style, and it does the impossible: makes Paul Walker likeable. Moving at a mile a second, it's pure over-the-top absurdity. And I loved every minute of it.

The pinnacle of post-modernism. Homages to all different sources (Scorsese, Hitchcock, The Duke, Alice in Wonderland), this film plays like artistic pop-trash. They have sex on the washing machine, for God's sake! So awesome you'll want to watch it over and over again - and after each viewing, take a shower.

Indulges in an over-the-top hyper-style and does it pretty well. The plot is shaky at best, but that can be over-looked in favor of some pretty interesting performances and shots. The whole movie is an assault your notion of just how ratcheted-up a scenario can get, and harnesses bizarre serendipity to portray a city and cast of characters out of our dreams/nightmares.

I should find this just another stupid action flick with a shallow, obnoxious, unlikable antihero of a protagonist, a kid as a textbook McGuffin, and a plot that relies almost completely on coincidences. But I just adore the way it all comes together. Behind the guise of a crime flick, the film has two running plots, a Western and a fairy tale, both twisted into something nigh-unrecognizable, propelled by hyper-stylistic direction and a score that holds the tension in. Two hours of blood rush.

The special effects, camera work, Russians and gunfights were awesome. I didn't like having to look at Paul Walker's mug for 2 hours, but overall this was a pretty good movie. Very melodramatic, and trying a little TOO hard to make the plot twisted were the only downsides to this movie.

Insanely over-the-top film that is great fun at first, but becomes hard to take due to the sordid nature. Children in constant peril leaves a bad taste in one's mouth and feels exploitative, but Stanley Kramer shows more promise with this follow up after the great film "The Cooler".

A lot of fun. I never thought I'd say it, but Paul Walker is great. The scenes with the boy trapped in that couple's home is legitimately terrifying, but the resolution was pretty hokey. I didn't like the neon ending very much either, but it was still a lot of fun.

I can't believe I overlooked this movie for so long. It's exactly the kind of twisted over-the-top action you could possibly want in this type of story combined with an exciting adventure and interesting story. There's really nothing I would have changed in Running Scared to make it better; as is this is a perfect action movie that relies on its style over its substance. A distinct lack of campy thrills and taking itself seriously makes Running Scared a winner.

The over-the-top shootout in the beginning was good, stupid fun. Over-stylised, sure, but if the movie had continued in that same tone it would have been pretty enjoyable. Instead, it sucks all the sense of fun out of itself by using some dubious themes and becoming a mix of cliches and stupid character decisions.

A disturbing diorama of desperation, dirt, depravity, and dysfunctional families. The (incidentally very good) end titles hint at this movie being a dark fairy tale, something like a "Grimm brothers 2.0 mashup" and as that, it works quite well. If you like to wallow in just about all of humanity's filth for two hours, this movie might be just right for you.

A new candidate for the worst film I've seen, over more poorly made trash, in that it generates nothing but meaningless contempt. Crass, soulless junk which disguises itself in ugly camera tricks, ugly one-note characters, ugly and pointless amounts of violence and seedy content, a terrible plot and with nothing justifiable to it when even exploitation films can muster some for themselves. That the director showed so much promise with his debut The Cooler (2003) makes me even angrier.

Frantic, melodramatic, overwrought, gratuitous... They really tried to pack as much as possible into this film. Some scenes were so unnecessary. Paul Walker still doesn't quite make a convincing actor, though this was probably his best work that I've seen. Really quite a ridiculous film that doesn't let up and leaves you with a cheesy, predictable ending. But you know what? It was entertaining. Beginning to end. So I sort of find it hard to fault.

This movie contains some of the craziest scenes I have seen in a film. The screenplay has several interesting moments and choices. In this script not all of the choices work but this film is not afraid to go in original and unusual places. The cast does good work here and things are never boring.

Running Scared is noisy, trashy, over-the-top, and silly enough that you almost have to take it seriously. Does that make sense? I feel like it doesn't but there aren't many other ways to describe it. It feels like it goes by in a flash, it has surprisingly good performances, and while it may offend or repulse, it won't bore. It's not for everyone, but those in its target audience are going to find something they'll really like.

Grimy, ugly and sleazy actioner combines all of the worst aspects of the nihilistic, early aughts thrillers and then throws them through the woodchipper model of editing press to make the film incomprehensible to boot – it’s startling that Kramer would follow up THE COOLER with this borderline unwatchable mess of grotesquery; a decent cast are left to founder with characters whose motivations make little sense from scene to scene. Blech!
