Hemsworth delivers a solid james hunt, but the winner here is clearly brühl as the unrelenting niki lauda. This story was epic as it happened, and so it is on screen. Both racers were fallible egomaniacs with a weird sort of mutual respect that drove them to constantly test their limits. They achieved, but they also paid dearly. They became the real life heroes others could only make up. It is only fitting, if not quite overdue, that they got their movie to attest to that.

Stellar filmmaking from Ron Howard that got me on the edge of my seat far more than I anticipated. The racing scenes are deftly helmed and quite intense, while Bruhl and Hemsworth work well as the rival racers. One of Howard's best films to date shows that he has serious directing chops when given the right source material; here's hoping that he gets more original-feeling films like this in the future.

For one who groans at the mere thoughts of biopics and sport films, respectively, the combination of these two subgenres was far from alluring. But Ron Howard managed to keep me very entertained, and both Hemsworth and Brühl inhabit their roles well. As much as I did enjoy it, though, I also came away with the feeling that the experience had been a somewhat vacuous one.

Really well-made movie. The story is really good, and accurate by the sounds of it. Howard's directing is also very interesting, with his use of lighting and the color spectrum he uses for all of the races and scenery. Hemsworth and Bruhl both do their roles flawlessly as well. It's sad that this is a seemingly forgotten and underrated movie. It's really good. Worth a viewing if you still haven't seen it yet.

A very pleasant surprise. Director Howard has previously been a good engineer at best: Apollo was an effective drama that captured a bygone era but it was also very dry. RUSH on the other hand is energetic and funny while likewise building a believable view into the 70's formula scene. It feels like a work of a young and hungry director. This must have been a pet project to him; I have to admit that I didn't think Howard had this film in him. Hemsworth and Bruhl own their roles as well.

Prior to Lauda's accident, 'Rush' seemed to reduce his fierce rivalry with Hunt to a blandly superficial series of childish insults and bitter remarks. But it manages to haul itself up in its second half which, although steeped in certain movie conventions, competently balances storytelling and modest thrills with admirable characterization.

Howard encapsulates a time period and the nectar of whatever bizarre fascination there is to be found in watching someone race a metal box around in circles really fast. The acting is stellar and the story is sure to keep most people hooked right up until the finishing line. After that, however, this movie is a Grand Prix easily forgotten.

A wonderfully compelling take on the rivalry between two '70s Formula 1 stars, Rush never takes the easy way out. The drama comes naturally as both Bruhl and Hemsworth get chances to shine - and shine, they do. The screenplay is sharp and witty and the direction infuses the whole product with energy. An effortlessly enjoyable film that kept me utterly enthralled.

Superficial but entertaining enough portrait of the Lauda/Hunt "bromance" is told in a laid-back, old-fashioned style by Howard and Morgan, but there comes a point when this fairly lightweight (and repetitive) tale becomes a mild chore, especially when nothing is done to develop the two men's personalities beyond their "beauty and the beast" archetypes. Helped immeasurably by Hemsworth and Brühl's charismatic performances and some throaty (and exciting) race sequences.

Ron Howard once again showing us how real life story can top any fiction in the world. Well paced movie with good character development and great acting! Only bit I missed bit more is more racing as it was done brilliantly and authentic as hell! Ending of the movie as well is fantastic closure to this brilliant story. I have good feeling that Daniel Brühl will surely be in Oscar contention! (edit: Oh well looks like I was wrong, biggest mistake by Academy IMO this year)

An absolute thrill ride. Ron Howard creates a visual spectacle that surely will be Oscar bait in a few months. I see a best director, best picture and best supporting actor nomination for Daniel Bruhl coming soon. Such a heated rivalry is made even more intense by creating a tone, an atmosphere full of pressure to win. Hemsworth and Bruhl are definite treats to watch in this film, there brilliant characters allowing for higher stakes when the two of them are on the grandest stage in racing.

Thoroughly entertaining biosportsflick. Well crafted all around with Brühl's performance being a highlight. The script gives sufficient space to both Hunt's and Lauda's very different personas and the film is all the better for it. It's all you'd expect from a Hollywood blockbuster...so: well done England.

Doesn’t rise above a Discovery Channel reenactment level. No subtext between the two leads can exist, as everything is spelled out on screen, sometimes literally in font 85, for the most inexperienced and lazy viewer that whine if they don’t get their baby food in sizable portions. I only kept watching because of Brühls kind of fun impression of Niki Lauda

Both character (as they say to themselves), are assholes, but as the movie progresses both grow and carry a certain weight with them. Hits its marks. Decent dual main character film. They each have their arc, their story gets told, no one is the logical antagonist unless you hate either hedonism or critical thinking. Howard's score ramps up the drama too artificially at times & some of the colour filtered cgi was a bit shabby bordering sharknado quality.

It’s odd how often this is praised for its approach to filming car races: critics seem just not to have perceived how great a reliance is placed on imitation TV commentary and graphics, so that the whole thing does little more than replicate the methods of sports broadcasting, resulting in a rather tired and silly way of conveying narrative. Pace may be brisk, but to describe this as “a philosophical drama about the way men move through the world” (Ty Burr) is to lose all critical perspective.

Why was I not so impressed by this? I mean, the acting was good, directing was fine, cinematography worth mentioning... But the story never got to me. I liked the story, sure, but I never really got to care for the characters and their development, or lack thereof. Lauda's fight that got him back in the seat never touched me... Rush is an entertaining film that illuminates the rivalry and friendship between Lauda and Hunt, albeit in a conventional "Hollywood" style. The racing scenes are short and not that compelling (for someone who isn't an F1 fan), though thankfully the rest of the film is. Using both subjects as the dual focus of the film was an inspired choice as they complement each other felicitously. Hemsworth is good, but Brühl steals every scene.

Pretty decent biopic, but also incredibly typical Hollywood which made me dislike it. Solid acting and filmmaking, but there were so many elements in the film that made me roll my eyes because it's so typical for Hollywood (biopic) films. We get a romanticized view of two people who were both kind of jerks and this always bothers me in films. We never get to see real depth. As a film this is a pretty decent watch, but there were too many annoyances for me which made me dislike the film.

You feel a bit sorry for Hemsworth & Brühl, who both give intense performances but don't have a script to really get their teeth into. And they're the only highlight; the rest feeling - in both tone and style - like a made-for-TV Sunday night job, full of dull dialogue and cheap visual effects. Ron Howard is as bland a filmmaker as you can find, and this might very well be the best he's made. Damning with faint praise, sure, but that's probably not entirely fair. Hemsworth comes across as a buffer version of a young Peter O'Toole, but it's Bruhl who runs with it and is the heart of the film. Neither Lauda nor Hunt is shown as more than what the is, which is a flawed and competitive individual. This balance makes the film rise above the formula and the Howard trappings of blah.

Exciting and informative as any TV broadcast -- that means cameras everywhere and the usual intensity given by the narrators --, but what matters here is not Howard's view on history, which always looks attractive and never cinematically deep enough to overcome its production values. What really matters is the story of love and hate, of one man chasing the other with different strategies -- one is agressive, the other is scientific. I wasn't born yet, but F1 used to good, huh?

This is how I really like to see a "based on true events" movie go. It takes that source material and elevates it so that it really feels like a story worth telling.
